i need switching help

ok guys, riddle me this. the carl martin octa switch and combinator both have 8 inputs. i have around 10 fx on my board, with a kidna funny setup.

my signal chain at the moment is

tuner (not a problem - can go before board) > fuzz > wah > compressor > fuzz > dist > drive > EH Freeze > volume > polyphase > univibe > echo > rotary >amp.

howw the bleep do i get that setup into a carl martin style situation?

i could lump together the second fuzz and the distortion in one loop as i do already, but that still leaves me short.

and that post-gain volume pedal... dayumn...

any ideas?

Re: i need switching help

You do run the compressor with the fuzz only, correct? Loop them together. (1 spot saved).

And then it's the wah. Why loop it in the Octaswitch? Leave it upfront, after the tuner.

At least that's how I would go about it.

Octaswitch, eh? That means that you will end up with a tidy board after all? I didn't see that coming...

yeah, i reckon one loop can have the comp, a muff, and a DS1 in it - my univibe and polyphase can go in one with an aby pedal in there as well so i can flip between them.

the only trouble is, i'm running out of presets rapidly and can't afford a gigrig pro 14!

Re: i need switching help

so which do you think i should get? i've been reading about the combinator 2, and it might have impedance problems.

Re: i need switching help

I need a lot of reading to do in order to find out which does what, but it seems to me that the octaswitch is very hard to beat. For me, it would be more than adequate...

yeah. the combinator has three banks of 6 thingys, versus the octa's one bank of 8. but i can't see myself switching banks mid song or anything. i'd fall over, for starters

Re: i need switching help

went for the octa switch 2. fingers crossed i can work out how to use the darn thing... here's what i'm thinking

tuner/wah outside of the board, then loops

1.fuzz
2.fuzz/dist
3.drive
4.freeze
5.volume
6. univibe and polyphase with aby switch
7.echo
8.rotary

i figure i should be able to get 8 usable mixed patches from that. if i can't, i need to stage an intervention with myself

Re: i need switching help

That's basically how I run my Loop-Master,snaresy.

Gtr ☞ Wah outta the loop(stand alone, not in the L-M)then:
PolyTuner ☞ CE-2 ☞ EHx Octave MultiPlex ☞ DLS ☞ TS-9 ☞ EP Booster ☞ FlashbackDelay ☞ AC15/30

The fun begins when my Pinnacle and Plexi-Drive arrive

That Octaswitch looks interesting,though...

Re: i need switching help

Are you running these all into in front of your amp?

Just imagine each switch being the only pedals you have in front of your amp, and what combination you would want those pedals to work.

For me:

Tuner
Wah
Chicago Iron > Fuzz Face > TS style OD
SolaSound Tone Bender
KoT
Compressor
Reverb

F/X loops:

Rotary/Vibe > pre-amp > Delay
Echoplex

Return

For you:

tuner (not a problem - can go before board) > fuzz > wah > compressor > fuzz > dist > drive > EH Freeze > volume > polyphase > univibe > echo > rotary >amp.

Tuner

1. Fuzz > Wah
2. Fuzz > Dist > Drive
3. Comp > EH Freeze
5. Volume
6. Phase > Vibe
7. Echo
8. Rotary

Just suggesitons, mix and match how you like it and LISTEN TO YOUR EARS!

Re: i need switching help

i'm waiting on more DIY cable to complete my board, but currently it's making sense to split the board into two halves - cleanish, and dirtyish.

keeping my rotary sim in line with everything after the octa switch at the moment - so i can have in on in any permeation.

You made a huge error. Get the Combinator, and send me the Octaswitch.

Re: i need switching help

i have my first band practice with it tonight, by the way - not got my univibe and polyphase hooked up yet as the cable kit isn't here, but i've got a fairly usable lump of stuff...

buttons

1:blues driver, freeze
2:blues driver, el capistan
3:blues driver, rotary
4:all of the above

5-8: same as above, but with either DS-1 or Pig mine in place of blues driver.

bet i get it all wrong tonight

Re: i need switching help

by the way, i was thinking of sticking the vibe and polyphase in the freeze loop with my ABY switch, so they're always there, and controlled with the A/B/Y pedal. i can remove them with one button, or switch either or both on as well. would free up a couple of loops on the board... what do you think?

Anything you can place outside of the Octaswitch gives you more options.

Tell me, doesn't the Octaswitch require a whole lot of short cables? Do standard 6" patch cables work, or do you have to make your own of varying lengths? Making your own GLs or Planet Waves cables can get real expensive.

yeah... i had a Bullet Cable DIY kit and some normal patch cables, and so far i've managed to hook up the pedals OKish, but i've got another one on the way to make the lengths a bit more there. it certainly means more expense and hassle. and my board is currently about as pretty and organised as it always was...

Just scored a slightly used Octaswitch on eBay for £200. Is that good?

it's what i paid for mine, so i'd say it's an AWESOME deal. but i'm often an idiot.

anyway, congrats - i used mine at practice tonight and it was really useful. it would have been the best ever, but a) it was our first time playing after over a month off, and b) the JCM900 i was playing through hated me. not my gear, you understand - it hated me personally.

I saw it for $310 on eBay this afternoon, and snatched it up. New ones are going for $415+ (£270). Mine was in plastic wrapper in the box, used sparingly I was told.

Snarezy, could you post a diagram of your switching menagerie when you're done?

Snarezy, whadda you think? Git goes into A/B/Y pedal. Puts entire Octaswitch in Loop via A/B/Y. Then A output goes to DAW as a dry signal via DI, B output is dry to amp via DI thru, and C-->B output is effected out (Octaswitch) to amp and DAW via DI thru. That way, I get both a dry signal (channel 1) and effected signal (channel 2) through DAW interface. Brilliant!
