Re: ANALOG vs DIGITAL which delay do you play ?
Im an old tape echo type guyu.Had a Univox cartridge tape echo unit back in the '70's . It made me into an echo freak! I always wanted an Echoplex, but instead had a four track reel to reel modded with a variac for speed and used it for echo/slap and voice doubling chorusing! Those were fundays! Things are too easy now. We have grown fat
![]() Cumbersome, but it had fidelity and looked cool running in the background. I still have tapes from those days. They play back a stilleted performance for sure since they only had vocals and some guitar in them ![]() Now days, I have a Danelectro Dan-Echo Echo Pedal. Simple, cheap, "Studio quiet" and it rolls off the highs on the repeats if you wish via a knob. I'm much more of a reverb fanatic than an echo guy now.

Re: ANALOG vs DIGITAL which delay do you play ?
I'm with Don ,just give me reverb.I never use delay anymore, but I still own an analog unit. I don't like digital as much.

Re: ANALOG vs DIGITAL which delay do you play ?
The Memory Man has been on my board(same MM) for nearly 15 years.
Rusty, knob broken off and the best trippy echo I've heard with maximum fuzz pumped through it. |

I have a dan-echo but Lately I've been using an old AKAI 4000DS MKII reel to reel tape deck as a delay....It's cool....

Re: ANALOG vs DIGITAL which delay do you play ?
I use a Fulltone Tube Tape Echo, and love it for my long delay. I've never heard a better tape delay.
I'm considering getting an analog delay (MXR Carbon Copy has caught my eye) for a shorter delay, similar to the Memory Man Deluxe (but cheaper and smaller). ![]() BB

Re: ANALOG vs DIGITAL which delay do you play ?
I use an Ibanez AD-9 which is an old 80s thing and an old Jap Boss DD-3. In the studio I have a Line 6 Echo Pro Rack and about 10 grand of plugins in Logic. So I have lots of delays to hand.
I'm really in the market for either a Roland Space Echo, say a 201 or a 501 and a nice Copicat. But finding good 240 volt ones is getting harder every year. |

Keeley mod Ibanez AD9 (short delays), BOSS DD2. The DD2 is very analog-like.

Re: ANALOG vs DIGITAL which delay do you play ?
Im using my 1992 Alesis multi effects processor
and a Marshall Echohead they both have Tape settings that sound pretty good. Of course nothing beats a REAL Echoplex though

Re: ANALOG vs DIGITAL which delay do you play ?
For those shopping, I'd say...... Pros & Cons - (IMHO):
Digital Delays will generally give you the widest range of delay times. It's also more convenient to dial in exact times/tempos. On the flip side, they do tend to sound more synthetic and break up awkwardly in certain scenarios. Most affordable and most models to choose from. Analog Delays: Although they're more limited in delay time ranges compared to Digital, their strong-side is in the sound quality. They're not as likely to degrade the tone (especially the delay signals tone) as digital can. They are amazing to dial in nice, full and warm harmonics and for me, the harmonics are what make these my first choice. Tape Delays: Cream of the crop, but you pay for it. The warmest and fullest! Cons are, they are very expensive, bulky in size and most common to be problematic over time. Nice asset for studios, but not nice to take on the road. Notable that they are typically so warm and full, it may actually be a more "muddied" tone than desired if looking for crystal clear articulation. Most all of the delays mentioned here are great.... I will add by personal preference, I think the Moog Analog Delay isn't the most desirable sounding although built well and feature heavy... just a lot of bucks for the results. I personally prefer the E.H. Deluxe Memory Man, Analog Delay...... |

Re: ANALOG vs DIGITAL which delay do you play ?
For the folks out there wanting an analog sound but not the high price tag, you should check out the generalguitargadgets.com delay build... check out the sound clips near the bottom of the page after you click the link. i built one and LOVE IT! Its a digital delay, but it dosent know it. it thinks its analog haha

Re: ANALOG vs DIGITAL which delay do you play ?
I use a TC Electronics G Major but would LOVE to have an Echoplex or an old Roland Tape Delay.
I ran sound for a a band in the 80's, the guitar player used an Echoplex on stage it sounded great but with the fog machine you had to clean the heads every other set ![]() I had a roland tape delay out front & it's the best thing I've ever used for a short "slap back" type of delay on the vocals. Also in the Analog Vs Digital debate category I'd put an old Ashley SC50 analog compressor up against any of the new digital compressors, all of the digital ones I've used really "chopped" things up. joe |

Re: ANALOG vs DIGITAL which delay do you play ?
Digital, an EHX #1 Echo.
Of course if I had the money i'd get a tape echo but for now the EHX is doing great.

Re: ANALOG vs DIGITAL which delay do you play ?
I love tape delay, but I don't have one. I have been kicking myself for years for not buying this old WEM Copycat I saw in a local shop for $20 back in the late 1980s. I wanted it, but I didn't actually have twenty bucks in my pocket at the time...
I used to use an old analogue cheapie for a long time. It sounded good, but it didn't have the delay time I need for some of the Pink Floyd stuff I used to play. So I got a DD-2, and ended up with a DD-3 as well. Nice pedals: very robust, useable, sufficient delay time...but they're not tape! Splat

Re: ANALOG vs DIGITAL which delay do you play ?
Well, I need to change my vote. Just traded my Boss DD-6 for the new analog MXR-169 Carbon Copy, and I LOVE IT!!! I believe it has more richness to it...a very subjective observation as we all hear different things. It just sounds more like I'm playing in a large concert hall where the DD-6 sounded more like the high school auditorium. In combination with my Marshall built-in spring reverb, the guitar just sounds more natural than with the digital delay. Does that make sense?
![]() ![]() And yeah, wish I had bought that EchoPlex I saw at a garage sale in 1986 for $50!

Re: ANALOG vs DIGITAL which delay do you play ?
Analog...MXR Carbon Copy
This is becoming my favorite pedal hands down. It sounds fantastic! I never thought I would like a delay pedal so much. |
