Re: Your Favorite Overdrive or Distortion pedal !

The Very First Rat ( Killer ) and the first MXR Distortion Plus.

But I haven't used many of these in a while since I've gone mostly Rack ( G Force ) and my Mesa Mark lll ( Blue Stripe ) . Now my Pro Series ,Morley ,Volume ,Wah and distortion peddle has some unique sounds that I haven't fully explored .

Is that Keeley Java boost a good Rangemaster clone ? How's it sound ? Can you get Sabbath kinda tone ?

I think so! The Keeley JB works great with a already distorting loud valve amp. I use it a bit differently as I use to drive a tubescreamer clone with great results.

When I finally get my new set of P/us for the LP I'll recording some clips -probably some with the java / TS as well- so there you go.

Grainy, thick B. Sabbath distortion is not my kind of thing but select the Java booster to full range, crank the gain knob and direct to a slightly overdriven British amp like a Laney, Marshall, loud Hiwatt and you are in the right ballpark.

In the meantime, listen to these clips:
Java Boost by Keeley, Rangemaster based Tube like Tone!

Re: Your Favorite Overdrive or Distortion pedal !

I have a ton of od/distortion pedals I don't use very often, but...when I was in TX earler this year for the guitar show, my friend hipped me to the MI Audio Crunch Box. It smokes at the high gain thing, but it also works killer as a lower gain pedal too. I've been able to coax some Carlton/Ford type tones from it, which I really wasn't expecting at all. Been thinking of buying the Tube Zone just because I like the Crunch Box so much.

Just picked up a Hot Chili Tubester pedal real cheap a couple weeks ago, it's pretty interesting though I wish it had a little more bottom end. The voltage control is very interesting.

I've used Tube Screamers on and off since 1982. Own a few originals and some modded reissues. Best sounding one I have is a Maxon 808 RI, the one that looks like an MXR pedal, totally stock.

I owned a Klon. Great for clean boost, but the overdrive part of it sucked. The more you turn the gain up, the more nasal sounding it got with no bottom end. Sure didn't sound like part of the amp to my ears.

Lexluthier I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that feels that way about the Klon. I tried it and didn't understand all the hype...I was told I was crazy, I just didn't like it all that much..

The Klon isn't for everyone ! I use it for a slight boost and a little OD .. The key to liking a Klon is you have to be happy with your original amp sound because the Klon just makes it a bit bigger and juicier ! and Yes if you go to crazy with the gain it gets a bit trebley but that's good for a bit of a Rangemaster tone ... If your used to a Tubescreamer shaping your tone then a box as clean as the Centaur isn't for you !

Brad Whitford of Aerosmith's effects board .. notice the gold Klon !

Re: Your Favorite Overdrive or Distortion pedal !

I liked the clean boost part of it, but the overdrive was a real downer. Kind of the reason why I bought it, everyone said how wonderful the overdrive is, and I just didn't hear it at all, very nasal and no bottom end. Hey, I'm not mad since I sold my Klon for more than I paid for it!

PS, yes I tried it with loud Fender amps. I had it for 6 months and it just didn't work for me, sorry.

Re: Your Favorite Overdrive or Distortion pedal !

I tried it with a Reinhardt 18 watt combo and a Suhr Badger 18 watt head and just wasn't happy with it. The Badger takes pedals very well and I still went back to my OCD v1..The Reinhardt sounds great without pedals. Warren Haynes uses one and it sounds great, although his hands have something to do with his tone. It all depends on your rig..

Re: Your Favorite Overdrive or Distortion pedal !

Of the two pedals I own, my favorite would have to be my Mxr distortion III.
Its a pretty good pedal that helps me get the extra distortion I need at times for my blues deluxe. Haven't tried to many pedals though..

Re: Your Favorite Overdrive or Distortion pedal !

I generally prefer amp overdrive but out of the pedals I have had I really prefer the Fulltone OCD.

I kinda thought most fuzz pedals died with the advent of better distortion overdrive devices. Dallas Artbitor , brought back the Fuzz face Hendrix used to use but theres an overdrive option on that too

Klon is probably my all time favorite pedal. Most folks that try one don't get it. Best way I have found to use the pedal is to push a tube amp that is already cooking into over drive.

For example Les Paul into Klon into Carr vincent amp set to 7 watts. Yes @ 7 watts the Vincent can silence amps with 3x the output.

Man oh man -- you want to talk about tone --- the guitar/amp become one. You literally control everything (like what those 50 grand TrainWrecks are known for) completely with the volume pots of the LP without having to DIME the amp.

It is a killer tone -- you really do not need anything else -- maybe a delay set to around 160 ms to just fatten the tone up a bit ala Robben Ford.

It really is a unique pedal .... but you need learn how to use it properly. It took me a while to "get it".

For most times I just go into 'NUKE' mode on my amp.
Better than an OD pedal.

Re: Your Favorite Overdrive or Distortion pedal !

That MKIV I just picked up has more gain than I think I'll ever use. It can eat a Dual Rec for breakfast and dinner.

For a boost though, I use either the onboard EQ or my Boss GE7 in one of the loops with a 'frowny face' configuration, instead of what the kids do nowadays with the 'smiley face' mid scoop.

I'm not a smiley kinda guy, in person... so I set my EQ so it looks more like a frown or a scowl. Works wonders.

Re: Your Favorite Overdrive or Distortion pedal !

Picked up this rare MI Audio Classic Distortion a couple weeks ago, only 90 were made. Kind of like the Crunch Box (which I have and I dig a lot), but it is way more flexible. The symmetry and character knobs change the entire sound and feel of the pedal, from a tight, crunchy sound to a loose, almost fuzz-like tone.

V.1 or V.2? V.2 has an internal presence trimmer pot to tweak the high end.

That's weird, because I first discovered that pedal playing it thru a friends plexi clone, and it sounded terrific.
