Question Best Fuzz Pedal??

I have been listening to a lot of the "Black Keys" lately and thinking about picking up a fuzz pedal again. I think Dan uses the Sovtek Green Muff or the EH Big Muff anybody know?

Wondering what you guys in general think as far as Fuzz pedals go? I don't really want to spend a lot on one and am leaning towards the Russian Big Muff pedal or Electro Harmonix model.

Also thought about buying a kit and building one, thought that might kinda be fun.

Your input and any sound clips would be appreciated.

Thanks

Foxx Tone Machine.

And for being in a plastic box with a plastic switch, the Daneletro French Toast is a great little pedal. It's the same circuit as the Foxx Tone Machine... the inventor of the Foxx Tone Machine is the current president of Danelectro.

BTW, along with the Big Muff, Dan Auerbach uses an original tone machine... he also has an original Maestro FZ-1...

Re: Best Fuzz Pedal??

It's hard to pick just one, fuzzes(z?) all have their own characteristics. If you can find a univox superfuzz, crown fuzz, or foxx tone machine for a good price (good luck), those all seem to be the "holy grails" of fuzz according to collectors. I just got the Way Huge Swollen Pickle and it is awesome but way over the top, the low end is crazy. A lot of people don't like it because of that, the Musket Fuzz is the same way but also very cool if you're into that. Zvex and Devi Ever and 2 companies to look at as well. Sorry I'll shut up now (I've been WAY to into fuzz boxes lately) but listen to/try as many as you can. I'm sure your line of work gives you access to a lot more boxes than most of us, take advantage of that Jonesy!

Yeah I am really digging a lot of the Black keys songs for sure.

Cool I will try and check that Tonebender clone, seems like there are dozens of Fuzz pedals out there.

Sounds cool, I am seriously thinking of picking up a kit and building my own Fuzz pedal. Where did you get your kit from?

In an interview he said he uses the Sovtek Green Russian Muffs. I don't know why you'd want to listen to the Black Keys anyway...

I just picked up a used Big Muff w/tone wicker for $50 off craigslist last week. I love it. If your thinking Big Muff I would recommend that one.

Yeah I think that's a good deal for sure. I was just looking on ebay and there were Fuzz pedals on there for $400-$600 dollars that is insane

Then toggle switches on that EH model look interesting.

Re: Best Fuzz Pedal??

If you want a balls to the wall insane fuzz, get the wooley mammoth (usually a clone since the real thing is rare and pricey as all hell). I boost my WM with the SHO for fun.

Yep, with the Tone on and the Wicker off it's your standard Big Muff. The tone switch takes the tone circuit completely out, which is a common mod on some Big Muffs anyway (or so I've read). Taking the tone control out also makes it louder. I haven't played with the Wicker very much but It does accentuate the highs and will feedback easier (although sometimes that can be half the fun).

The best part is it's a normal size pedal unlike the ginormous standard Big Muff.

Yeah, that Jordan thing looks cool...
I'm guessing it attaches to the guitar rather than the amp?

There sure are no shortage of fuzz pedals or opinions of them..

Awesome.

Fuzzes can change character drastically when you drop volume!! I used a Blackouts Twosome and I can get loads and loads of diff tones though that sexy thing.
