Hohner L59

Here are some pics of two Lester copies I have.
They're made by Hohner, model # is L59 (yeah right....)
Strange thing is that, allthough they are supposed to be the same,
you can still play a game of "look for the 10 differences".

They're a bit in between actually. About 1/4" thick maple. Luckily it's no photoflame .
The cherry one also has a nice flame. But unfortunately it's not as visible from all angles.

Sorry for ignoring the 'CHERRY' ... but I don't like red guitars and I've got fed up with all the 'Cherry red' I've noticed in the past ...
It's just my personal taste ... no need to discuss it further ...

Re: Hohner L59

Here's some more info on them :

Finish Tobacco burst, medium weight, mahogany body with maple top, mahogany neck.
Manufactured in Korea, chrome hardware, Gotoh tuners, pickups of unknown origin (Gotoh ?), pretty hot in character.

Finish Cherry burst, heavy weight, mahogany body with maple top, mahogany neck.
Manufactured in Korea, gold plated hardware, tuners of unknown origin, pickups (designed by) Kent Armstrong, PAF'ish in character. (I took the covers off.)

Re: Hohner L59

I had a Hohner L75 for years, was my main guitar. It was a lot like the L59 but with a bolt on neck and either an all mahogany body or a walnut top (I think.) It was always a really good playing guitar. Felt ok and sounded really good... and reliable.

Agreed....to a point. One of these is a beauty to play. The other one is a lemon (for my taste). It's the ancient rule again : every guitar is unique.

Re: Hohner L59

Since this thread is dedicated to Hohner guitars, does anyone know anything about the earlier Hohner LP copies? They have a 4 diamond inlay on the headstock and Hohner is inlaid in cursive at the headstock. I've tried to find info on them on the net, but there is just not too much out there. I've been trying to figure out if they are FujiGen or Matumoku or Terada. Anyone have one of these or know anything about them?

Re: Hohner L59

Hi, a friend of mine has inherited a Hohner L90 Goldtop without serial numbers. Can anyone give me an idea of insurance value of this guitar as from what I can make out this is now a highly collectable guitar as production on these had to cease due to a law suit from Gibson in the early 90's.

Thanks

My guitarist has one identical to the Cherry (the one on the right). His still has the pup covers on it though. Man, that thing is heavy!

The plot thickens...

Lovely flamed tops seem to be something that the L59 has in spades.
Has anybody seen a goldtop version of the L59, though? I bought one for 125 in 2005. I know the L90 is more normally goldtop with P90 p'ups but mine definitely says 'L59' on the headstock. Also has PAF style p'ups...
Would add pics but either I am being very dense or you can only upload pictures as URL's. Sorry, newbie to all this malarky.
I'd be grateful for any advice.
Cheers,
Paulo

Re: Hohner L59

This L59 is a 79.A collector in Japan wanted mine because it had no logo he said that was quite rare.
The tuners were worn out so I replaced them with a set of aged Kluson's from rsguitarworks

I bought one last year that I'm making a project guitar, as it is getting all new electronics and hardware. Mine is a Les Paul custom copy in what Hohner calls Cherry Shaded Sunburst in their 1977 catalog ad.

I'm under the assumption that those with the inlaid Hohner script (like ours) is the HG-430-LP model as shown in the 1977 catalog. I found pics of one that is supposedly is a 1973 and the design looks unchanged. Review the specs carefully in the catalog and see if they match yours.

Here's some posts in this forum about them. Some of the posts are ones I started. Hard to get info on these.

Hi I just paid 400 for a mint 91/2 L 90 hohner GT. Came with brand new peavey Strat case so take that away and I guess I paid about 310 pounds which is price new in 1991. The only thing that let's it down are the pearloid fret markers and it would really benefit from a new set of MOP ones from Stewmac USA . Awesome playing , looking , feeling guitar with very nice gold top finish and plus those awesome Kent Armstrong p 90s . Obviously not as
Good as a real 50 s Gibson but I promise you these have to be some of the best value Vintage guitars on the planet today ! I used to own a mid 80s hohner black L59 too but that was pinched a few years ago . Picked that up from junk shop for 50 quid and I
Promise you although it was pinched along with a vintage ric 360 and a couple of Jv Strats the Hohner was the one I missed the most ! These will start to jump in value soon ? They have too ! Chris Cross London Uk

Re: Hohner L59

Here's a pic of my old Hohner L59, it was my very first electric guitar. I basically learnt how to play on this.
I have good memories of that guitar. I could have had better pickups, but the wood was good.
