My New Yamaha Lord Player

Got this at GC for $250 a few weeks ago. This weekend I finally had time to tear it down. I am a died in the wool telecaster dood, but have been listening to so much Thin Lizzy and the Darkness lately, I had to get one when I found one I liked, and this one spoke to me.

I enjoy playing this- very fun, and based on my limited experience it gets all of the Les Paul tones. I play through a Fender prosonic and hope to plug into a wound up marshall some day.

Things I did, clean electronics, remove chrome pup covers, polished frets, oiled rosewood. Intonation is good, neck needs a slight relief.

Things I found- THICK maple top- not flamely, but maybe 3/4 inch thick. I think the body is mahog or agathis. Solid. Frets virtually untouched- no wear at all. Serial number is 305XXX. Biggest surprise was 2 older SD pickups- a 59 in the neck, and a JB-M in the bridge. Different colored bobbins, but I kinda like the look. I read about the JBJs, and I assume this is a like model but would love info you have it. Finally what I think is a 'transitional' neck tenon (pokes into the neck pup cavity).

working on photos- not going well.

You can also load them directly to a photo album in your profile, then link them into a thread using the icon above the "Reply" box.

To open that photo album, go to your "User CP" link, look on the left-hand side of the page, and click the "pictures & albums" button.

Re: My New Yamaha Lord Player

Are you adding image tags to the image web address at each end ? [img] www. ----- .com [/img]

Pasting the address using the yellow pyramid Icon (located at the top center of the MLP text window) automates addition of image tags.

Example from your album:

Code: (without spaces between tags + address) [img] http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/memb...e45139-lp6.jpg [/img]

You copied and pasted the link to the html page with the pictures. I went to your picture, right clicked on it and then copied the address for that picture.

Very nice guitar!

Re: My New Yamaha Lord Player

LP500 & 550's used to sell at $500 to $600 about 4 years ago ( I almost bought a black Studio Lord, see below ).

Your 400 is worth at least $500, especially with orig HC. But they are so unknown, it may be hard to find a buyer. Yamaha has always done everything "their way," so there are differences between a true Gibsun burst and Yam products.

Not sure what the differences were in all the models. I know some had push/pull controls. They supposedly made a 1000 or 1200 model, never have seen one online tho.

Is your Lord a two piece top?

Re: My New Yamaha Lord Player

The top is 3 pieces (significant?)- but the top is THICK- next time the strings come off, I will take close ups, I see no lines in the back- looks like 1 piece, but if its agathis it may not be a big deal.

No push/pull pots.

The middle position (which is my fave sound right now) uses both volume pots as a master, in other words, I can't dial in full volume on the neck and then 1/2 on the bridge for example. Both volumes work as a master. I don't know if this is the way Gibbys are made, but I don't think so.

The case is a Tokia case, and looks like the one above, and is at least as old as the guitar. Regardless of all the 'pro/cons' of this wood, pickups (which I am really pumped about) 2 or 3 piece, this is a GREAT guitar. Can't say it as good as the real thing, never tried one out for this long before- but I am very happy with it.

Top of the Lord Player pyramid is the 1000. The top of the Studio Lord line is the 1200.

I have an LP-1000, I try to post pics later if anyone is interested. The model borrows from the high-end SG's & comes with spinex pickups and "bi-sound" which adds tone pot bypassing & push-push coil tap.

Though the studio lords don't have as good of a rep & have the Yamaha headstock design, but they can be very good as well.

Please post pics, it would be the first I have seen!

Some Studio Lords have the Gibsun openbook headstock (see pics I posted above) but are somewhat rare, as are Lord Players.

Re: My New Yamaha Lord Player

You got a great deal there. I traded my LP400 for roughly the same value and I thought it was a major steal and I believe yours is in a better condition. What pups are those in there? I think I see Seymour Duncan? Mine came with Burstbucker Pros and the previous owner lost the original pups. Would love to the originals too. You could still find a lot of info on these guitars here at the Yamaha website's archive ???????????? | ??? | ???????

According to the archive, only the LP400 featured an agathis back while LP500 and above models had mahogany backs. Good to know they all have maple cap though. Here's the Google translated info of the LP400:

Mon Mar 1984 Release
1985 year end sales
Price 40,000 yen at launch
Rosewood fingerboard main specifications
Agathis body maple +
Mahogany neck
Covered pickup backing Han A (AlnicoV) 2
Super Light Strings
Weight 4.3kg
Red color sunburst, brown sunburst, black, tobacco sunburst

You've got a 28 year old guitar there, qualifies as a Japanese vintage right? How come they only sold for one year? I gotta say they are of great build quality overall. Tonally beats some of the authentic "G" LP's I've compared them with. Here is mine http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/othe...rd-player.html

Re: My New Yamaha Lord Player

Yep- duncan 59 in the neck and a JB-M in the bridge. I emailed CS at duncan and they quickly replied (to their credit):

"Hi Rich,

That's definitely a JB in the bridge. The "M" or "J" is just who made
it.

Best,

Scott Marceau"

happy news- I guess the non SH-4 nomenclature on the JB means and older duncan?

Re: My New Yamaha Lord Player

The letter indicating who made it confirms it is old. Very old. Halligan? You best hold on to those pups.

J usually means Marcela Juarez, a little lady that is Seymours "right hand." Maybe M means her, also. There is a youtube from Seymour that shows a couple of brief shots of her. Her work is legendary. Her JB's are to die for.

You better buy a lottery ticket or try your hand at craps. You got a hot streak goin' on.

Congrats on a Dy-no-mite Axe, I have bid WAY more than 250 pounds Sterling for those beauties and been consistently out-bid, so to say you got a bargain is an understatement...

Now, where's that jealous icon at...

After I get some other stuff sorted out, probably put my LP1000 up. Check back if you might be interested. Fed up with Ebay so I would rather move it here.
