Edwards 112 vs 130

Hi Guys,
I'm thinking of buying either and Edwards 112 or a 130. How would my forum brothers compare these guitars, to each other, and is there something about each I should know?
The 112 I can get used for $940 cad while the 130 is new (Ishibashi) for $1475. There is quite a price difference, in this scenario, so I'm wondering if the 130 is really worth the extra coin? These are very rare in Canada so it's not like I can try before buying.
Any insight you could offer would be greatly appreciated!
Thx in advance.

Re: Edwards 112 vs 130

1400$ is a fair price for an edwards, the guitars are very good. but i would try to buy one used, possibly off a MLP member for much less, the gear page is also a good place to check, i had a few leads there too. a fair used price for a 130 would be 800 to 1000$. depending on condition.

all the 130s i've seen were very light weight guitars. that definitely translates to tone. a lighter guitars yields a lighter tone, a 7.5lbs guitars will sounds less bassy then a 11lbs les paul custom. so take that into consideration. my edwards is just over 8lbs which for me is a nice weight. always find out how much these guitars weight because edwards tend to be very light.

the 130s also have seymour duncan antiquity pickups which are considered top of the line. they're hand wound. the 112 has mass produced Seymour duncans (which are still very good). these pickups alone retail for just under 300$

the 130s also have slight relicing going on and are all nitro. this makes them look very accurate to the les pauls of the 50s.

there was a 130 on ebay a week ago for 1000$ used and in very good shape. it didn't sell, it will probably be relisted for slightly cheaper. you should keep an eye out for that over the next few days. it was a lemondrop

also keep an eye on the MIJ classifieds section. and just generally comment and mention that you're looking for one of these, someone might take notice and offer to sell you their's. that's how i bought mine. :)

Personally, were I to get a 112, I'd be replacing the bridge pup with another Duncan '59 or chucking both pickups for something boutique. With a 130, I'd probably leave it alone.
The 112 has a super high output bridge pickup. Bad call on that, imo...

Re: Edwards 112 vs 130

I love my 130.
Antiquities are the sh*t and it rings like a bell.

The only other Edwards I wish I owned is the new 125 which is basically the same guitar but without the relic job and Seth Lovers instead of Antiquities.
The upside is that the relic job is such that I never worry about that first ding.
:)

If you really want the JP mod, you'll need to replace the Ants/Seth Lovers with 4-wire pups and either wire up 4 push/pulls, buy a pre-wired JP harness or get a pair of SD Triple Shots and a couple of push/pulls.
The last option is the easiest DIY.

i'm actually liking it a lot. you're referring to the seymour duncan JB. its got an awesome growl to it and it very harmonic. not suited for soft stuff, but really kills when playing the hard stuff. its a pikcup i would keep the 250k pots with, 500k pots would really make it sharp and trebly.

i'd like to keep the JB and replace the 59 from the neck with something else. maybe a seth lover, or a lollar imperial. and then use a 500k pot with that.

Re: Edwards 112 vs 130

JB & a 59 is a great combo.icebacks like to rag on the jb all the time but they've got their head up their PAFarse
dunno exactly how i'd feel about 250k pots in it though.stick to 500k,a PIO cap & 50s wiring

I'm thinking that I'm pretty much sold on the 130 as it won't require any mods and is full lacqeur. I'm ready to pull the trigger.... Any last comments before I commit?

James is that a PM Eddie? OR a Navigator?

Re: Edwards 112 vs 130

Eddie PM....might as well be a Navi except for the lack of FEB. Smokes almost anything I have ever played.

Just amazing. Real looker.

Re: Edwards 112 vs 130

Well both made by ESP but if you want to get into particulars.
Eddies have different back and neck woods vs a Nav.
Not made in Japan, not a hand carved tops by master luthiers, different hardware, etc.
Thus why they are much cheaper and possibly a better route to go for most for sure.

Navs are killer but WAY too expensive at their retail rates.
I would not spend $5K on a Gibson nor a Nav

JamesT 02-23-2012 01:58 PM

Re: Edwards 112 vs 130

We aren't talking about all Eddies vs Navs Chris. Just making a comment about my Pure Material. It's not a Navigator, nor did I say it was, but the PM was not built in China, and it's spec sheet reads much like a lower model Nav.

1 pc. Mahogany back, Hand Carved Solid Maple Top, Top Spec ESP Hardware, built entirely in Japan. I've played the PM alongside a newer Navi 480 and while the Nav was a slightly more premium spec guitar, sound and playing wise, the PM held it's own in resonance and tone.

It's not a meaningful conversation though for the OP as the chances of finding 1 of the 31 PMs made isn't that great anyway. I would still say the 130 is a great guitar though and worth it on the budget.

Re: Edwards 112 vs 130

All good, you pointed out it might as well be a Nav so just showing the differences of Edwards vs. Navigators to the OP.
Didn't mean to offend, no harm intended eh.

A PM 2 weeks ago sold on Yahoo for 79K.
It had me tempted!

Thanks but it's all in Japanese so I don't understand. Great deal tho.
I'v ebeen trying to order a new one from Ishibashi but the link they provide me to enter my CC info doesn't seem to make it back to them. i've tried twice and not I'm getting fed up with the process. There is a 14hrs time difference between me and them so interactions only take place once per day, via email. The guy there is trying to help me but I'm just sort of getting a bad feeling on this now. It shoudln't be this complicated to order a guitar but for some reason it's becoming so. Failing these two attempts using their secure link to send CC info (via https) he has asked to fax the info.
Should I bail on the order? i've never ordered from Japan outside of Ebay. I guess I coudl have him send me a paypal request...

Any idea if these guitars take the short or long vol/tone pots?
Thoughts?
Thanks Ian!

Re: Edwards 112 vs 130

Ian! Copy the Japanese text. Open another Google tab, under "more" you will find translator. Open it up, paste the copied Japanese text, etc etc.

I'm older than dirt, and I figured it out. Good things take a little work sometimes. :)

And it is complicated buying from Japan. But the reward is immense.

Someone snagged the 130 LD, btw.

JamesT 02-24-2012 11:55 AM

Re: Edwards 112 vs 130

Ian, another tip is to download the Google Chrome browser (best browser out there in my experience) and it will translate pages for you. The translations can be a little rough, but that's just the way it goes with Japanese to English translators. You will get the idea.

As for pots, you are always safer to go with long shaft pots and use washers to get the height correct. Nothing worse than pots that aren't long enough.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I have a RS Vintage kit (long shaft) sitting in the part drawer just waiting for some action!
