Re: Slash: Derrig vs Max - The AFD Period
Just finished reading 13 pages !
I do feel that some people need to drink less coffee and remember it's all in the hands of the player. I have been a big fan of Slash since 1989 and he is a part of the reason why I started playing the guitar. I do sound the same if I'm playing my Strat through my Fargen or my Les Paul through Marshall VM or a Germino. I guess the same goes for Slash and the rest of us. Let's not compare Slash to Jimmy Page and put our flamesuits on and say one is this and that, both awesome players that made great music. What I love about Slash is his melodic solos which have been missing on the last two VR albums I think but he said in his GW column that he's going to change that when the 3rd album comes out....Yes it's going to come out ![]() Great thread... |

Re: Slash: Derrig vs Max - The AFD Period
True. I've noticed that in the pictures of Max 'Bursts the inlays look more like early 50's inlays rather than those typically found in 58's, 59's and 60's 'Bursts.

Re: Slash: Derrig vs Max - The AFD Period
The inlay on the earlier Les Pauls has a wider variation in pattern. Starting in '57 the inlay start to have strong lines going north and south on them. Check it a few examples:

I have to admit I'm slowly coming around to kinda admiring Slash's playing.

Re: #36 mod on AFD
some little things about the S.I.R "Stock #36" mod...
no BOSS OD in it... what would have been the point of adding a tube? <-- sorry for my english... I heard about Slash having is BOSS OD in some amps too anyway... the mod is really that simple and can be made in most marshalls: add a preamp tube in the signal path of the lead channel... on lead channel add a parallel loop that puts the clean sound directly at the last preamp tube(must pass through the last one)... you have to compensate the other half part of this circuit resitance... that makes the chimey "clean" sound, but with POWER tube saturation, almost full harmonic range and add playing dynamic!!, mixed something like -3 db (at speaker pov) with the full preamped lead sound.... I personally believe (convinced?) that the Stock 36 was EL34. you know the result... THAT really "bad to the bone" tone!!!!! (good idea to have a switch... more voicings in the same amp..) PS:DO NOT TRY TO MOD YOUR AMP IF YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT SECURITY MEASURES FOR HIGH VOLTAGES AND BETRAYING CAPAs It can KILL YOU EASILY!!!!!! the best way is to ask a tech to get it done EDIT: I never seen the real amp but it sounds like the mod I described above... ow and JCM 800 marshall schematics says 1981... for those who doubt the 36 was a JCM800 EDIT2: I recently put a hand on the schematics for the real mod... that's cabled differently compared to what I say above but the principle is the same... use 2 preamp tube for the added clean channel instead of one and (I not yet have looked at it seriously) surely some Frequency Filtering (Direct soldered EQing ) on 2 tubes(surely the clean to roll off some frequencies part that's added ). I'll put an exact match schematic soon. Last edited by kotatsu; 04-23-2008 at 05:30 PM. |

Re: Slash: Derrig vs Max - The AFD Period
Trust me, these pictures are all originals from 52-60. Dave's look perfect for 1957 - 1960 style inlay. There was thread on the LPF that went over the changes over the years in detail. Early goldtops had more random geometric shapes going on in the inlay compared to 57-60's LP's.

Re: Slash: Derrig vs Max - The AFD Period
Slash's first sunburst LP was a tangerine-kinda-burst quilttop originally owned by Alice Cooper guitarist, Steve Hunter. This was the guitar Slash smashed through the wall in the stuido because of the bowed neck. Slash purchased Steve's LP at Guitars R Us and used this guitar for the first time in public on Sep. 28 1985 at the 8th annual L.A. Street Scene show. This was the first time Slash using a Les Paul at a GN'R show!(pp.137-139Reckless Road)
This LP and some B.C. Rich and Jackson guitars, were the guitars he used until he reckoned they sounded like sh*t in the studio and thats when the Derrig comes into the story... I've just acquired "Reckless Road -The making of Appetite for Destruction" which contains several pictures of this guitar. Its a must for every Slash and GN'R fan! Great book with loads and loads of interesting pictures! I ain't sure if this LP was a handbuild replica by some of the L.A. ghostbuilders like Max and Derrig or if its a special genuine Gibson. Definitely an interesting guitar as well.. Here are some shots! with scratchplate: ![]() without: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() w. a lovely chick! ![]()

Re: Slash: Derrig vs Max - The AFD Period
I must say that this is the coolest thread I've ever read...
I love AFD and most other GNR works. Slash, however can't be relied on he was on heroin or wasted nearly 100% of the time.... (read his book)... And that's OK... It's not like hendrix / page / clapton / man others we're clean.......... The rock n roll life is not easy (any of you that have gigged can say that) I am a retired guitarist I still dabble in a hobby manner but the scene can be insane and the scene I've seen is nothing compared to what slash dealt with....He really has cleaned up and I praise him for that. SOOO... can someone that knows slash ask for a COMPLETE verification of the guitar by visually inspecting it? can anyone close this? who does the set-ups on these before he goes in the studio??? timg |
