Re: 1980 Tokai LS200 $4000+ & still climbing!

Well...it is a very rare guitar. One does not see many of these and it is incredibly well made...1 piece Honduran mahogany back and neck, solid flame curled top, Brazilian board, and replicated off of a 1959 to every detail...how can you be lurking in this particular forum and not find anything special about this guitar? The price alone should tell you something. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

Re: 1980 Tokai LS200 $4000+ & still climbing!

That's one heck of a high price. This has gone way out of the "cheap alternative to a Gibson" ballpark, hasn't it?

Is the LS-200 the top model from that time?

YES!YES!YES!
LS200 is the top model and if i had any spare change available for guitars i would buy that stunning guitar,no doubt one of the finest les paul 59 copies MADE IN JAPAN
MAN! but the price is is getting too rich,it started at 250k yen only yesterday, some serious collectors looking at that getting that beauty,I have a THEORY who might be bidding on it?
the highest bidder is YAM*****,could this be M.J YAMAUCHI,THE JAPANESE COLLECTOR.......

M.J.Yamauchi's HIKIDAORE with MIJ Guitars! ......Tokai/Greco/Fernandes/YAMAHA/ESP/Navigator/AriaProII etc.

That certainly sounds a very plausible theory.

Just my opinion, but price is secondary when buying MIJ replicas... I think they did it (maybe still do, I don't have any "new" MIJ's) SO much better in the '80's than Gibson has done with any of their reissues ever.

$4000 is out out of my budget regardless, BUT, if I had $4K to drop on an LP and had the choice between a Gibson Custom SHop, or a high end Tokai from 1980... I grab the Tokai every time. Plus, in addition to quality, you already have an aged, vintage instrument.

Re: 1980 Tokai LS200 $4000+ & still climbing!

This really is a good sign for all those MIJ collectors out there. Finally they are starting to get the respect they deserve. If it really is as good as a genuine 59, then $4000 is nothing compared to > $100 K price tag on the original.

Yup...that guitar is worth it and I would rather buy that than a real Gibby IMO

That's three or four LP studios you could buy for that!

Not that I'm saying the Tokai isn't worth it.

Edit: The LS370 has fret edge binding. I was thinking that none of the MIJ guitars still had that. Do any of the other high end MIJ guitars have fret edge binding?

I don't know man, is that your only concern? Do nibs make the difference between a high end and mid range LP?
Look at the specs:

Quote:
AAAA Flamed Maple Two Pieces Top
Honduras Mahogany One Piece Back
Honduras Mahogany One Piece Neck
Set Neck - Deep Joint ("Long Tenon")
Headstock Angle 18 Degrees
Jacaranda Fingerboard
Fret Edge Binding
Bridge - HLS-VB (Brass Saddles)
HLS-VT Aluminium Tailpiece
Gotoh SD90-SL Tuners
Bone Nut 43mm
Dish (Amber Cell) Inlay
Seymour Duncan SH55 - Seth Lover
Posts - CTS (Long Shaft)
Switchcraft Switch
Bumblebee Condenser
Switchcraft Jack
Lacquer (Nitro Cellulose) Finish
Tokai Japan Hard Shell Case Included
Will the four Gibson Studios have that, too? No, but they'll sure be chambered!
Look for that in a Gibson LP and I bet you'll be in the 7-10,000 dollar range.

Hi. I think you misunderstand me. I'm not particularly worried about the absence or presence of fret nibs. I'm just curious about what's out there, and hadn't seen any new guitars with fret nibs. I'm also not pro-Gibson, I was just surprised to see the price and was quantifying it.

Re: 1980 Tokai LS200 $4000+ & still climbing!

I recently sold a Tokai LS320.....a totally superb guitar. No flaws, stunning top and played and sounded great.
It was my number one guitar for a long time until I had a 59 replica built. I used the Tokai over my Gibson's....it was a real quality instrument.....and it had fret nibs!
It became second to my replica and it was far too good a guitar to sit under the bed....the guy that bought it was dribbling!
