Greco Les Paul! Model Identification? LOTS OF PICS!

I just got this yesterday as a guitar to play around with. I have 4 Gibson LPs and I wanted something I can gig with as a backup, and fool around with pickups. Something to Abuse! It is in a horrible "way too red/orange" finish, but it plays smooth, feels solid.

Any idea what the model is? It says 650 near the headstock is that a hint? The serial number says its either 81 or 84, since the first digit can be a 1 or 4. The PUs a re "Scream'in 1982" pickups, so I guess its more likely to be a 84 guitar. Any help would be great!

It does have a tiny bit of Flame going too:

Do you mind telling me how you determined it was a EG59-50?

well its not a super real egf as the headstock is incorrect and there were no 650 egf models. only mint collection (82-91) models with bindig nibs are eg 59-85 and upward models. no les paul like script, incorrect truss rod cver....

Re: Greco Les Paul! Model Identification? LOTS OF PICS!

what a beauty..yup its a "mint collection" series greco because of the open "O" in the headstock logo.

I think these models with the screaming 82 pups are getting quite rare?

Thanks for the props! Just been playing it more. Not that keen on them Screamin 82 PUs... A little lifeless I think. OK, but nothing great. Anyone know the specs on these? Output? Magnet type? I thought these PUs were one of the cheapest ones Greco used?

The feel of the neck is not quite 50s, not chunky enough, kind of just slightly slimer than a 50s neck on a LP standard. Everything else feels great. Tuners could improve, otherwise its a lovely LP!

Re: Greco Les Paul! Model Identification? LOTS OF PICS!

the screamin pickups were somewhere in the middle range of the quality ladder. im not sure the magnet type, but i think they are alnico 5. the output is about mid from about 8-12k (neck and bridge)

I never got mine read but they did have a decent type of PAF Vibe to em but like early PAF's they were not wax potted so high gain amps could earn you some feed back real fast

Re: Greco Les Paul! Model Identification? LOTS OF PICS!

yea, i'd say they are paf'ish, but the best paf replica's were the dry pickups, so i they probably just wound these a bit more so they didnt compete with those since they were a lower model.

Re: Greco Les Paul! Model Identification? LOTS OF PICS!

Cool find
I didn't realize they are as nice looking as that, and most had the long neck tenon too. I do think the longer tenon captures more of the vintage vibe.

Here is a cool looking one on ebay right now. Lots of great detailed pics too:

81's Vintage Greco EG Les Paul Custom ! Made in Japan ! - (eBay item 320190639984 end time Dec-06-07 14:50:17 PST)

Dry Zs... I was hoping when I looked under the PU it would have a Z on it.. oh well..

Probably gonna put some after market PUps in them soon. Its a great feeling, great playing, great weight guitar, wouldn't want to waste it using those stock Pus.

Re: Greco Les Paul! Model Identification? LOTS OF PICS!

the dry z pickup's are the best japanese paf copies. they are worth quite alot. they can go for about $500-$600. if it was me i would drop some gibson 57 classic's in. they are my favourite pickup. how much did that bad boy cost you?

I am over in the UK, so around $700-750US. Is that too much? You have to remember everything is normally (literally) twice as expensive in the UK. Gibson LP standards, for example, are around $2700-3000US new

Whereabouts in the UK are you?

I've never seen a Greco in any guitar shop over here, infact, until I found this website I'd never even heard of them!

Just FYI, I'd say from my experience that Burny VH-1 pickups from the 80's are every bit as good, if not better PAF clones as the Dry-Z's.

Here's one of my Grecos:

Re: Greco Les Paul! Model Identification? LOTS OF PICS!

One thing that can almost not be argued, when The Japanese set out to replicate things, they do so very well many times if unhindered I have heard many a Japanese pickup that was far superior to Fender or Gibson pickups that came stock in many 70's and 80s guitars

I am in central London. They dont appear often (at all). Try ebay US or UK and you will find some nice Japanese LPs like mine....

My Greco sounds better than my LP Standard with stock PUs.... GIBSON TAKE NOTE!

Right.

I had a look down Denmark St when I was searching for my Gibby LP but that place seems to be trading on its name now, and all the new LP Stds were about £300 over-priced!

Looks like you got a total bargain though!
