Re: Yamaha studio lord ?
I had one very nice guitar, they did have two different headstock types though. I would say if it is the open book headstock it's worth it.

Re: Yamaha studio lord ?
Make sure it's got the traditional open book headstock, not the Yamaha style. Oh, and a model 800 or higher, 'burst for that amount of cash (with orig HC, too).
They generally go for around 500 to 600 USD for model SL 450's, 500's, 550's. If it's got the push-pull pots, you're in rare territory. |

Re: Yamaha studio lord ?
I had one (not sure of the model, but it was a black Standard version) and it was a good guitar, but a tad on the heavy side. It didn't really sound like an good LP to me; the tone was a little bit too bright. The pickups were decent PAF copies for Oriental stuff, but some SD's woke it up. I paid about $300 for mine back in the mid 90's; traded it when I picked up an R6.

I think the Studio Lord 380 was a bolt neck. The Lord Player was the first and best version. The L & P script on the headstock caused Gibson to make them rename it, I think. |

Re: Yamaha studio lord ?
Thanks for the info and link tonebone. I just bought (haven't got it yet) a 1977 Lord Player LP400. Looking forward to getting it and checking it out.
Does anyone here know what the pickups are in these (presuming they're stock)? Here's a quick picture from the present owner:

Re: Yamaha studio lord ?
Naw the guy said it was way too heavy nice guitar. But......... I got a friend to build me a Tweed 57 deluxe with the money instead. should be here at the house in a few weeks time. Got 2 LPs now, I did have the money for both but my Van took more than I had planned on. I don't really need another Lp especially a heavy beast. That one in Norway looks like a good deal for Kb
The one up here the guy has or had on ebay now, was in the local paper before. |

Re: Yamaha studio lord ?
I bought a SL on Ebay from a shop in Japan about 3 years ago. I'm not sure but I think it's a SL500? Have to check on this when I get home. It cost almost as much to ship as what I paid for the guitar. It's a carbon copy of the '81 LP Custom I had 15 years ago. Paid $500 for it and kept it a year - wish I had it now. Oy.
When I bought the SL I'd looked at other LP copies that cost the same, but my thinking was I'd get a better quality used guitar from Yamaha than one of the cheap copies where most of the production money went into the finish rather than the electronics or playability. |

Re: Yamaha studio lord ?
What models? Just price on ebay or musicians friend. I think a shop charges around $50 to $100 USD to install. All it takes is a screwdriver and a soldering iron. Plenty of hot-to's on the internet. Folks sell 'em here on occasion, too.
