That's what I do; but I use NOS Vitamin "Q" caps. You could use the Russian PIO in the same way, if the leads (one of them, at least) are 5 mm - 7 mm longer than the cap body. Which explains why I use the NOS Vitamin "Q".

And, I actually find the controls with the PCB board to be quite good.

Re: ls80 vivisection

no removal of that ****ing PCB board is the correct play for a keeper.
wether by total pot replacement or desoldering the board.
however some dickheads feel that it's better to keep it all original as much as possible so squeezing in a cpl of those ruskie bullets on the board is a pain in ze assss

Thanks slap...

It will be quite simple re install the board and the pick ups kept untouched....

The Noble pots on mine frankly didn't allow much control especially linear tone pots...

i did 50's wiring, all audio pots (best fot my taste and vintage correct), russian caps like yours

i played it a bit tonight... it seems i found my holy grail... more info later...

Just looked in the mirror, ... my head does look like a dick!

Still considering changing the 250k's in my Burny, but it matches my voices now.

Re: ls80 vivisection

Looks like you guys went for the .010's.

Why didn't you go for the traditional .020's he has for sale? Or even the .015's?

edit: I don't see the 35mm caps there.

I like the .010's as as like some of the high it maintains when rolled all the way down. I actual use my tone controls a lot more now.

Caps

I've had a good experience with this guy "outtahear" on TGP. Pretty sure they're the 35mm ones. Roughly the same as a AAA battery.

Re: ls80 vivisection

negatory i use 0.022's and get them direct from the KGB by the box
lower voltages will be smaller.guy above has the smaller more manageable size

Re: ls80 vivisection

Just ordered a couple more and this is what he said he has in stock. Going by the voltages, would the 47u be small and the other two large? I'm on a holiday so I can't measure the ones I got last time. Not that I care either way, just curious whether Size/voltage go hand in hand.

2) .047/200V
3) .022/1kV
3) .015/1kV

Yes. The 1 KV will be rather large.

Re: ls80 vivisection

silver bullets for LP's (1000v) green goblins for strats (160v)
so yes smaller voltage = smaller size
green goblins are K42Y-2 .can also be found in 22's
both rock harder than a clampets rocking chair i found greens to be a better match in all mahogany outfits though such as SG's,jnrs & customs

Re: ls80 vivisection

Heheh. I think it's funny they're now selling this as "vintage":

Vintage Tokai cotrol plate

As an aside, it seems to be accepted internet wisdom (MIJ afficionados aside) that Japanese guitars have crap electronics, but truth is it's a mixed bag with lots of good parts as well. I think a lot of people see such a PCB board and automatically conclude it must be crap.

it's not exactly crap I just deem them an unnecessary extra.
that they're also a dedicated circuit would also bother me

Saying the truth, on mine the electronic side was the lower level side... but it's only my personal taste... now guitar is touch (and knobs turning) responsive...
my ears are better than playing unfortunately...
