So some of us buy the odd dog or just get bored. If you're a Slap who doesn't give a toss or a Vintage who measures every paint flake post here if you want.

I've done a few so here's a starter.

Came as a well dinged Burny custom.



And after a bit of filling, sanding and spraying turned into the tux.

Here's the next one up for a mod. Might just do as Richie has done..strip and lacquer. It's a real good player, EG 450 from 79 so I'm guessing not worth much and I bleeding hate the colour.

My modded Les Paul Custom


My "In the process" LP copy.
This one is for slide.

I have new pickups to go in it, and I've changed the pickup rings, knobs, and toggle switch cap since this picture--all black.

I need to take some pictures so I can document the process.

Maybe in the fall/early winter I'll get around to the pickups & switches.


I know if I ever sold it I wouldn't reclaim what I'm putting into it, but I wouldn't get much selling it stock, and I rarely played it stock, so if I mod it--I'll use it--and it's cheaper than buying another one--that I would probably make the same or similar mods to.

Here's one I posted before. It was the time when Gibson released their JS model for stupid money, I had a black custom or two going spare so thought I'd do a version for cheap. Paint stripper, heat gun and sand paper.

i've noticed that once that opaque sealer comes off even the plainest of plain tops can come alive.
when i first got that evidwards in hand i thought 'ah cool a bit of flame on there' but prepping for paint revealed one hell of a flamed solid top.kinda put a dampener on the whole project though I was just fix in for another white custom with a maple top to complement my other custom and well yeah ... be a shame to cover that up
whoever did the initial strip really did a number on the binding though.

Refinished the top, replaced some missing binding ( patch up not the best job )and installed som PU-2's.
The sides have some bad chipping where the binding peeled away taking chunks of polly with it so could do with some more work but once you start on the sides then that leads to the back and that leads to the neck.

OK on a serious note, here is the Nav 480 thus far.
One spot of end grain in the waist really loved to absorb the oil more than anywhere else, no* matter how much I sanded it with 600+ grit sandpaper it still slurped it up.
So I am just bringing it back to the same level as the rest then spraying with lacquer.
That quartersawn neck sure looks tasty however!

Nice chunk of wood ya got there Udo. The guy who stripped it do a good job?

Yeah not too bad actually but I did go over it with 220 then 320 (600 for the end grained areas).
There are a few dark areas you can see that were from dents and dings and thus the finish was sunken into those areas.
They are touch to get out, even with lacquer thinner and I didn't want to level sand so I left em.
Add some character I suppose.

yes . . . cashews do have shells. Actually "hulls," cuz they aren't nuts per se. Sir Slap schooled me.
