Re: The Unofficial Official (etc) so you dick about with your Les Paul Thread.
After some opinions?
I took the damaged finish of this black custom coz it was stuffed but as its 1 piece and not bad looking, instead of respraying black I'm thinking. 1: clear coat as is. 2: Clear coat with a tint of black. 3: stain black, sand back then clear coat 4: a combination of both 5: I have know Idea and should just spray it black. 6: other. Cheers ![]()

That's a nice piece of lumber, would be a waste to hide it. Definitely wont spray it. Maybe like what slap says, stain and clear.
What do you ave planned for the top? |

@ slap, if i did that would I just put the stain straight on or thin it down. Light sand after?
Twchua, the top has a similar damage mark from a sticker also but only small. I am very tempted to see what the top is like but is it worth it? I don't know. I have sanded in the pup cavity's and one side looks to have potential while the other side has me stumped. By the look of it, it's probably a total mismatch. I suppose i could take it back and if its no good spray it black again. |

Re: The Unofficial Official (etc) so you dick about with your Les Paul Thread.
The original plan, because of the neck repair, was to do the top and back and leave the sides and neck black?
Stingers just don't look right to me and I would be bound to stuff it up anyway. Like Udo, I think number 4 would be good. (the back only )A bit of black stain and a sand to accentuate the pattern in the grain then some black tinted clear coat to blend it all together. Only problem with that is I would need a spray gun for the tint V's an areosole can. But I could probably borrow one. |

I got my 1.8 and my 1.4 guns in a complete kit for $60 and they work very well, rebranded DeVillbiss I think. You have a compressor? |

Nothing to do with that, I just like the wood to look and feel like wood, not smooth like glass.
Fretboards are raw wood (other than finished Tele & Strat necks). I just think wood should still look and feel like it did when it was alive, not glossy smooth unless it is an Arbutus after moulting. Finish, to me, is just a protectant, not a beautifier per say. |

Haha yeah terrified of gunking up the natural grain and beauty of wood with more crap.
The rawer the wood the better. |

Re: The Unofficial Official (etc) so you dick about with your Les Paul Thread.
She is all done with the lacquer on Monday and was put together yesterday, 1st time EVER being completed and strung up.
The lacquer is still curing so not handling it much but did play it for 5 mins last night. The wife was sleeping so I could not crank it but man oh man, talk about a resonant guitar. Whatever that mystery neck pickup is, it is unreal and never coming out. It has the stock Seth or Antiquity in the bridge it looks like. I will take a few pics of it complete today after work, with the Slap approved pickguard on it, if anyone wishes to see it. |
