Re: "Nitro" finishes on MIJ guitars.

just a heads up - acetone in nail-varnish remover took off the nitro of my '95 ObG 59RI no problem. didn't strip the whole thing, more a proof-of-concept patch but wouldn't have been hard

Re: "Nitro" finishes on MIJ guitars.

an old smart arse once told me acetone will just prove it's a lacquer finish
that lacquer finish could be a nitro or acrylic lacquer though.

Re: "Nitro" finishes on MIJ guitars.

Yessum...there are also many nitro based lacquers out there that intentionally have additives to prevent crazing/checking, hardening (a problem Slap always experiences), etc.
Those have less nitro vs. a more pure nitro and it is those finishes that take longer to react.
I just refinished 3 guitars, will post pics tonight once home of the Jr, of a post-catalysed nitro based lacquer and it supposedly resists crazing, yellowing, etc more than a regular nitro but that stuff wipes off easy with acetone.
I will test the crazing resistance however with some freezer and heat treatments etc.
The pre-cat lacquers are definitely more "tough" and have less nitro than the post-cat and seem to react less vigorously to acetone.

Re: "Nitro" finishes on MIJ guitars.

IT WAS THAT ONE TIME AND I SAID I WAS STRESSED OUT YOU PROMISED YOU'D NEVER MENTION IT AGAIN

you're a brute ...

where's this tele and did you do a black dye & sand back first?

pre/post/nitro/acrylic/acetone/thinners/KY lube I could give a shit what it is at the end of the day I like feeling WOOD IN MY HANDS (thats called opening the gate) and poly has just never done it for me.
tone, breathing wood, vibrations, shiny, protection blah blah i couldn't give a shit about really and don't buy into that circle jerk over them all either.

Re: "Nitro" finishes on MIJ guitars.

LOL yeah they all cover the wood and inhibit wood contractions.
Nitro just feels better on the skin and wood and cleans up if you ever need to refinish.

Cranky pants

Agreed it just feels better, and good point about it cleans up (easier) if you ever need to refinish.
