Re: An open letter to those seeking Burst Replicas

One of my suppliers called me and told me he had found some black limba for me but I would have to take the whole 400 bf. I thought WOW 400bf !!! SOLD right...wrong.
he then told me the guy wanted $48.00 per b/f. I offered him less than half of that and told him that when whatever drug he is on wears off to give me a call.

Re: An open letter to those seeking Burst Replicas

Has anyone seen/strummed the replicas that the late Sid Poole (RIP) built for Bernie Marsden and Geoff Whitehorn?

Sid got 'the' letter from Gibson ( I read it) They were very nice about it but they did threaten him with legal action. Sid was one of the top 5 luthiers in the UK, Sorely missed both as a luthier and a mate.

Re: An open letter to those seeking Burst Replicas

I played a Sid Poole LP Special-style guitar that was seriously one of the best guitar I've ever played. It was simply magical.

He was an incredible man and a world-class luthier and will be sorely missed.

Roman, long time no see...
Just curious - was Max ever chased by Gibson?
As far as I remember, he told me - no.

Re: An open letter to those seeking Burst Replicas

I've looked at a few of Max's replicas, and I'd buy one in a hot second. Yeah, I know it's not a real burst (I'm up to 16 of those actually played at one time or another now), and I know that it's not a true Gibson, and as long as it's clear to everyone concerned that, despite the name on the headstock, it's not an original, I'm just fine with it.

Ferrari bird dogs the kit builders that do splash bodies in fiberglass of their old cars, but if you buy a lesser (like a GTE) Ferrari and have one of the really good replica builders (plan on $200K plus) build a California Spyder out of it, you can put "Ferrari" all over it if you like. The chassis and engine numbers will give away its real identity anyway. People buy rusty old chassis sitting in a barn and build whole cars from them, and Ferrari will lend a willing hand. But do a fiberglass splash off an old Lusso and try to sell it and Ferrari's lawyers will be on you like white on rice.

Replicas are different from rip-offs. Gibson itself builds replicas of its own guitars, but they're not particularly accurate. If you want an accurate replica but you don't want an original, you have to find something like one of Peter's old guitars. I wouldn't (and couldn't) touch an original California Spyder, and certainly couldn't see myself driving a million-dollar museum piece around town. But I'd have no compunctions about paying supercar money (if I had it) for a replica...

Rip-offs have to do with intention. If you intend to try to pass off one of Max's replicas as an original '59, then it's a rip-off/scam/fraud, and in that case I'm real interested in seeing you go to jail <G>.

Re: An open letter to those seeking Burst Replicas

Using GIBSON name being not a GIBSON, is trademark infridgement. And it's illegal.
Selling replica as genuine is also a crime.

Absolutely stunning guitars.
The more I play them the more I appreciate his work. Not copying but doing his thing but the man must have been such a good woodworker. Top notch.

Hey George, I thought everyone already knew that ?

All kidding aside, it's not worth having a bunch of highly overpaid lawyers knocking on your door !
