Re: Unofficial official anything GRECO theory photo id related thread
Got this one yesterday off an EBey seller in Tokyo. It is a 1978 EG700 with hard case. I am pretty stoked as it will be my first vintage MIJ guitar. Maybe the first of more to follow? Really like the look of the natural top. Hope this will be worth selling my Gibson.
Should get it this week. I will post NGD and porn pix.![]()

Re: Unofficial official anything GRECO theory photo id related thread
I know it's a difficult question, but what's a good ballpark figure to pay for a Greco EGF-850 from 1981?

Re: Unofficial official anything GRECO theory photo id related thread
Depends on the shape but I would say anywhere from $1000-$1400 USD if it is original with the PU-2s (who some here swear are better than Dry-Zs, I haven't heard them so I don't know for sure) and there are no veneer issues. dsuspense had two for sale (one with Dry-Zs retrofitted). One was up for $1350 I think and the other was closer to $1800 (with the Zs). I think he sold the cheaper one for less than that though. Both were in very nice shape. That should be a good ballpark.

Re: Unofficial official anything GRECO theory photo id related thread
Question for anyone with an EGF-850 or higher "Super Real".
Does anyone have one that weighs less than 4.0 kg? Cheers, Wulfman |

Re: Unofficial official anything GRECO theory photo id related thread
Did research that for a while and have never found one. My former 1980 EGF1800 weighed 9 lbs flat and is the lightest example I have found, they mostly are in the 9 lbs 6-8 oz region (around 4.3 kg I believe). Makes it pretty plausable it's honduran mahogany they used, doesn't it?

4.1 KG here, non dowel tenon, same weight as my 2 Tokais, + same '59 neck profile.

Re: Unofficial official anything GRECO theory photo id related thread
Thanks guys, and Jacco for keeping track. I have a 1980 Greco coming in that is listed at 3.7 kg and has FEB. Looks like an EGF-850 but the seller probably is off on his weight or it is a typo for 4.7 kg.

FEB would ensure it's not a 450 or 480, hope it isn't ![]() No pics of the cavities? |

No cavity shots, the seller never went that far but listed it as a probably EGF-850 based on the control cavity being the same as another stickered EGF-850 he has for sale (that one had bad veneer problems). Pretty much any Greco LP from the time other that a custom would have the same PIO caps and braided pickups so that is not much to go on but with FEB it should be a decent model. Hopefully it is at least an EGF-850 with PU-2s. The board looks swirly like some of those brazillian ones on some of Villager's Grecos. It is a good candidate for some refinishing I think and I may just switch the tuners with those from an EG-450. It is definitley a well-played guitar from the chips and dings. It is missing quite a few lacquer chips. Could that add up to a half pound?

Re: Unofficial official anything GRECO theory photo id related thread
It was borderline, not a real bargain but as long as it has PU-2s in there there is not a lot of downside. After seeing that refinished Super Real for sale at Jingle I thiought this would be a good candiate for the same treatment. It looks to have a center-matched back so I think an EGF-850.

Could it be a lightweight aluminum replacement? Not sure how to account for the other 4 or 5 ounces though. Must be a typo. |

Once oiled you can never get the wood clean and dry again. Start off slow with a 50% blended Tung and mineral spirits combo for the 1st few coats and sand all end grain/neck with 600 grit as it really sluprs up the oil. The back sand with 320. |

EGF extended tenon
It would be difficult to prove or disprove without x-rays obviously, but does anyone know if
some EGF's had "extended tenons" under the pickup cavity as pictured below ? ...or is this an urban myth that I am pointlessly raking up ? If valid, which EGF models would this apply to ? Hoping this pic originated from a catalog and not someone's imagination. Sorry if I'm mistaken, but did you say at some point that you'd seen a dismantled EGF-1200 with this style of tenon, in Asia Mark ? I read this somewhere else awhile back, at Japan axe, possibly. Anything like this in EGF catalogs Wulfman ? There's never a helpful radiology nurse around when you need one.
