Weirdest obg i ve ever seen :reprise:

We all know about the fantastic custom made OBG that VILLAGER bagged not so long ago ,A custom made ORVILLE BY GIBSON spotlight special ,five were made for demos at japan guitar shows.

Weirdest ObG I've ever seen..

In that thread it also mentions the guitars were built for a 1994 catalogue shoot ,Well i have a copy of that exact catalogue ,so tonight i dug it out and low and behold as mark said and was informed ,there on the inside on the front cover and the inside of the last page ,there are some very different than stock OBGs.

I really thought i would let you the MIJs lovers have a peak at this very rare orville by gibsons,In case ,just in case someone comes across another for sale or for auction..
It also makes me wonder were these other limited edition customs obg are ,do they still exsist, who owns them,in what country! JAPANESE COLLECTORS...why have not one of these ever been seen before ?
A lot of questions!!!!!!

When VILLAGER said five were made ,did he mean 5 spotlights or just the five that appear in the catalogue !

I'm pretty sure that one on the left in the first page is on RinkYa (and has been for a while)... That top is pretty distinctive.

Thanks for sharing, Mojo!

Re: Weirdest obg i ve ever seen :reprise:

YEAH ANDY ,I saw that OBG as well and have ben watching it ? I do not think it is the same guitar as in the 1994 catalogue ,looks very simular, yes indeed, but i am positive it is not the same guitar.Plus the one in the catalogue has a black headstock as far as i can see
Which leads me to think that the guitar for auction on rinkya is another custom made one?Did they make 5 models of each guitar that appears in the 1994 catalogue, which means it could be one or a very rare OBG,,problem is the serial is 1995.

I've been eyeballing that one myself all week. It would be a nice one to get.

Re: Weirdest obg i ve ever seen :reprise:

That's not the one I meant. I was talking about the tobacco burst 59RI on the far left of the first photo. Definitely seen that in Rinkya and the fact that it is pictured with special/custom guitars suggests that it is a solid flame top...

Cue everyone looking for that auction

Re: Weirdest obg i ve ever seen :reprise:

there have been a lot of 'flame top' Orvilles/OBG that show up & that end up being veneer & not solid top

unless a seller can verify the top construction, I assume all are veneer

I just saw on another forum where a seller claimed a guitar he had on eBay had a 1 piece back but it's actually a 3 piece back

there are too many people dealing with this stuff that really have no idea how to verify their own wares; they just BS their way thru' the maze ............

just goes to back up the old saying, 'buyer beware' .........................

Thanks for sharing, Mojo!

Yeah that sold the other day. Finally he listed it lower with a reserve and the reserve hit for what he originally was asking for it. Nice thing too is that he shipped internationally so no Rinkya fees etc at all...you could have just bought it directly from them.

I see the walnut veneer top on YJ went for nearly 87K yen; crazy ..........

AFA veneer tops go, there is a LS-120 veneer top currently on eBay with a $3300 bid ............

I did not think it was very expensive for a OBG and if it is rare that must be a bargin compared to what I see other OBGs go for

Re: Weirdest obg i ve ever seen :reprise:

That veneer is not lifting...that is just the way the light is hitting the stain that has overlapped the binding. Some LS-120's were solid tops and I have seen them as such. We all know you hate veneer so give it a rest please.

Re: Weirdest obg i ve ever seen :reprise:

I like my customs and solid colours so I have no problems with veneers (as long as they don't lift). My guitars have veneers, my furniture has veneers.....me not so though, no need to hide behind a veneer.

Seen quite a few of these Orville odd balls over the years never really took my fancy, totally see why traders buy them but a little too frilly for my needs.

Agreed...on a collectors ideology, they are well worth the purchase but for a keeper as per looks alone it is not my cup of tea. I would prefer if it was a nice plain top and naturally stained or oiled, that would be nice.

Re: Weirdest obg i ve ever seen :reprise:

Here’s the $3300 minimum bid veneer topped wonder
eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices
Item # 180568487458
What the Hell; the ‘center seam’ doesn’t even match in the fourth photo; yeah, that’s a solid top alright.
That is only one of the indications/confirmations that the top is a veneer, not solid, as some weedys would have us believe.
Someone here needs to lay off the weed & it aint me ……………

I only inquired about the veneer tops because as I stated, “I'm completely miffed as to the attraction that buyers have to veneer tops”

I was hoping that some here that are die hard & avid veneer fans may be helpful in some explanation(s) but it’s pretty obvious that the veneer lovers here would rather make snide remarks & hide behind their fondness for lower quality stuff, instead of offering what is their real attraction to & for a fake top

What the hell is wrong with you? Are you broken?

It is not the case that we prefer veneers over solid top as an active choice. It is just that

a) solid tops are harder to find
b) solid tops cost more
c) veneer tops do not usually lift, only on Grecos it seems.
d) veneer tops often look better than solid tops (symmetrical)

I'd also like to point out that if you get up on stage and suck at guitar, it doesn't make much of a difference whether it is a solid top or a veneer top. I've just had to explain this to Koubayashi on the other forum... stop wasting your time hunting for solid tops and just play the fcuking thing.

+1000...Rich, You can't see the forest for the trees. Why do you not just stay out of the threads that you feel so inclined to always hijack and start a shit tossing festival? Just go play your guitar...can you actually play or do you prefer to look at your solid top and dish out a side order of arrogance to everyone here? I can hear a distant hammering noise...it's coming.
