The Kauer Daylighter Passaraound Thread!

The Daylighter arrived at its first stop yesterday - my house!

It is a Korina Express model with WB P-90s (medium output). It is a big ol' bastard, but it plays like a dream and sounds great. The neck is huge - about the size of my R8. The Korina body has a nice acoustic resonance. My favorite little feature on this guitar is the wood binding - way cool. The recessed knobs are also a nice touch. Upper fret access is fantastic - which isn't necessarily what you'd expect just by looking at the guitar. The angled neck joint makes this possible.

Criticisms? None, really. I suppose that I would probably have Doug put a belly cut on one for me. Possibly a forearm cut on the Express model (w/out the cap). I'm a Fender Jaguar guy, so the body feels very familiar, but I'm of course used to those cuts. Doug mentioned that he uses a slightly smaller neck profile on the newer production models, which would be my preference as well (although this one plays great as is).

The Carbon Fiber appointments are very well done, the tuners are unique, the recessed input jack is very well done, and the action/playability are as good as could be.

I'm working on uploading a video, but in the mean time, a few pix. I was hoping to get some shots outdoors, but we haven't had any sun for the past two days, so this will have to do.

Edit: Reverb free video, as requested:

Romy is about 3 and a half hours and Doug is about 2. I also have 1 of my Favorite Tele builders right down the street Kieth Holland and I never even get to go there. But a trip to Doug's may be needed soon.

Sweet! I can't wait for this one to head to Houston.

Just don't sweat on it too much, Dan. I'm still trying to get your stink off the Mustang.

I think that stink is probably from the 45 years of play before I owned it!

(And, I didn't notice any stink! Smelled like old Nitro to me.)

It will never, ever come off. Pretty soon, it'll rub off the Mustang and on to you.

Sure, buddy. It's just an old guitar.

I'm just funnin' ya, Dan. I AM excited for this one to come in, though.

Well at least that solves the mystery of the two small smudges on the back.

Now on topic, I'm particularly excited to compare this one to the Special in my sig. It sounds and plays exactly like I want. Different to be sure. I'm excited to hear some WB p90s as well.

Contact Doug? That is what I did - although this was a few weeks ago. I'm not sure if the list is "full" or not.

Re: The Kauer Daylighter Passaraound Thread!

FANTASTIC Dan!! That video is great!

So a couple quick notes: On an Express a larger belly cut and arm cut are no problem. What I do now is a little deeper belly cut that rolls around the "horn" you can kind of see the difference here:

BTW That picture of you holding the guitar REALLY shows off the ribbon in that piece. Its hard to get it to show but when it does its pretty cool.

SGL responded to your PM.

Well very cool, I'm glad your digging it! Your right about the neck carves, our "standard" carve (I hand carve them all so just about anything is game) is .89-.90'ish tapering to .99" at the 12th fret but a much slimmer in the shoulders C neck. The Express your playing is solidly in the D / Boat Neck camp.

That belly cut looks great - that is just what this guitar needs to fit me like a glove, me being a but tubby!

Great work, Doug. Just when you think that every good guitar design has already been made, you came up with the Daylighter.

You and me both buddy LOL. I hitch em up high so frankly I don't need a belly cut, I need a belly scoop! Nice thing is on an Express you really could go strat deep in terms of the cut but I prefer the newer long, rolling cut.

Sure! The reverb comes across way heavy on video, but not nearly so much in the room. It might be that my camera is sitting on top of a desk right next to the amp - some of that 'verb might be the room.

I'm planning on another clip this weekend, and will do that for ya.

Thanks again. Hopefully there is no problem w/ the fact that I'm doing this via Youtube. A member here was complaining and raising hell in another thread about how he refuses to listen to demos on Youtube, particularly those with heavy reverb and boring blues licks.

I wonder who he was talking about?

Well You must have forgotten the money you have in your Hollywood budget for these types of productions. You should fire your assistant.

Glad you liked it, Doug. I went ahead and annotated the video clip to tell which pickups were being used. I was hoping to catch the switch in the shot, but... oh well!
