tele copy
so I've grown to miss my old MiM tele a little.... so I thought about getting a tele or even a strat copy to play around with...
MiM teles are 300-400... but I don't miss it that much ![]() has anyone had experience with the squier teles? are they really so bad that they are only worth $100? are the Xaviere tele/strat copies better/worse? SX/agile/douglas? I've seen the SX for $80?! main thing I care about is the neck/playability... if the pickups/electronics are meh, I can change that. but I'm not keen on a bunch of neck work to make it playable. just looking for something for fun...

Re: tele copy
Where do you see a Squier Tele for $100? Everyone I know who has one is at least satisfied with it, especially the Classic Vibes, but they paid 2-3 times that, 4 times for new.

Re: tele copy
I've found strats and teles for 100-125 squier/bullet/affinity
my MiM was well built (it was a 92 model, I bought in 94) but even then the squiers were kinda seen as lesser than the mim... but I never had one, so I dont know why they are so cheap! the xaviere strat is about 130 new, and the tele is about 140 (blem stock, but new) that's like gambling money... I've spent more on lunch at a strip club do these guitars have crabs?

Re: tele copy
Well, Sweetwater doesn't sell any Squier Teles under $280. They do sell Squier Minis at $100, but no full-sized guitars. That oughta tell you something.
Me, I'd spend the money on a returnable Classic Vibe.

Re: tele copy
I bought a Rondo SX with a contour Ash body, bound maple neck for $120 to leave on my boat. Changed out the tuners, swapped the Pup's with a pair I had and it's not half bad. Had to take it in to get it set up, the neck needed to be shimmed. Hard to beat for the price. It has dime pots and a plastic selector switch, switching them out would improve it. But then you are almost at the price of an Affinity.
SX Furrian MN Ash 3ts - RondoMusic.com Good luck...

Re: tele copy
Squier Telecasters can be very hit and miss especially the Affinity versions.
Affinity telecasters can have multipiece bodies with a veneer but I THINK thats been phased out, cheap pups and electrics and thinner bodies...which to me makes a little difference....also usually have unfinished necks and also Top loaders (strung through the bridge)..theyre okay beaters but need a few upgrades (tuners, pups etc) to be a nice guitar. The standards are in my opinion a good middle ground, very very close to the MIM telecasters (if you get a good one) - again hit and miss with quality but when you get a good one they equal MIM telecasters (not so sure now MIMs have increased their game) again unfinished necks (in terms of no heavy gloss) which I like, nice rosewood, also full thickness body and string through makes it comparable, the electrics are not actually that bad, full sized pots on most of them (ive owned a few with minis) and easy to upgrade, i usually like putting in a 4 way switch. I actually had a vintage blonde Squier standard I ended up doing a straight swap for a Mexican standard because of how nicely it played...it had a great neck, nice fret ends and decent enough hardware (better than the Classic vibes)...again play a few as im pretty sure you can get some real shit ones. ..Ive owned one or two with a shitty truss rod and crappy action..with no play. But if you get a good one if say it's very, very comparable to a MIM standard. The classic vibe are amazingly built guitars in terms of construction and pickups..the wiring is very odd with the ground sitting on the cavity sheilding, but the necks are slim but also incredibly with a nice vintage tinge poly coating..the wood on mine being a custom was a great 2 piece centre seem body...It was built just as well as my Japanese Fender and comparable to the American - easily... (this is the neck and body construction) and the neck has flames going all the way up and on the headstock. The only draw back with the CVC was the shitty bridge which was some shitty metal coating in chrome, crappy screws, wobbly switch.. etc but that was hardly a huge job to replace those.. just used american parts and it was fine. The Fender Japanese electronics are complete junk!!! more so then the Squier standard. But the CVC is the nuts... I love it - tons, even with all the upgrades (I ended up breaking the switch apart on stage by accident) but would have nooo problem buying a Squier standard over a MIM Fender....except the Baja, now that's a whole ton of guitar. I love Telecasters and spend most of my guitar playing days using them or varients of, owned quite a few (dabbled in flipping guitars for a long while and upgrading them)

Re: tele copy
cool. thanks for the input, I'm going to hit some pawnshops and call some of the CL listers.
I also just found out from a buddy that there's a guitar swap meet this weekend about 35 minutes away... it will be in the 80s, so I'm thinking it will be a good time... ![]() BTW, yes, if I cared more about this one I would spring for a MiM or a new squier... but I was just looking for a beater for something cheap and a little different vibe

Re: tele copy
The CV squier tele is freakin awesome. I got rid of my mim tele once i got the CV, it was that much better.
They're $350 new and IMO, the best bang for the buck tele around. Its's a great builder platform too. Find a good used one and you won't regret it

Re: tele copy
Apparently, the rumor is, there are just a handful of factories in China that make guitars. So it is not unlikely that the guys that are making Squires on the 1st shift are making SX or Douglas on the second shift, and Agile in the third shift. And counterfiet Fenders somtime later that day. So they are all pretty much the same. And, a lot of talk on the forum lately suggests that China is getting pretty good at putting these things together.
Here is my new Douglas telecopy. Good guitar. Needed a thorough set up upon arrival. Now she kicks ass. Great $150 delivered. I'll leave everything stock for now. The electronics are ok. I'll probably change them out when I find a deal on pickups that I can not refuse. No rush. I recommend this model.

Re: tele copy
Like Mal says, no substitutes. A MIM Tele or CV Squier Tele can sound just as good as this baby:
