NGD - Taylor acoustic

My Washburn jumbo has its place but its not the all around workhouse I wanted.

Spent most of today running all around the city, hitting nearly every music store I'm aware of with a decent selection of acoustics and I can honestly say none of what I tried did it for me like this Taylor 214ce. That goes for other Taylor's or Martin's two or three times the price of the one I purchased.

It feels and sounds fantastic. Satin neck is comfortable and similar in profile to my Gibson, which I really like. This is not a USA made Taylor, and therefore has laminate rosewood sides and back. I just simply couldn't hear much of a difference between it and another Taylor with solid rosewood sides and back...certainly not enough at least to justify spending twice as much or more.

The store rep even tweaked the neck for me, and has this thing set up like an electric, which is precisely what I want. I'm really happy with this guit!

Also, I'd like to add that I'm really impressed with the quality of the "bag" case. It's a very durable-feeling canvas like material on the exterior, and also has a thin, hard shell inside the walls of the bag, effectively making it a "hard bag".
teame1 and CHUNKYNECK like this.

Re: NGD - Taylor acoustic

Very nice! Taylor's are my favorite acoustic guitar and I prefer them strongly over Martin. I like a brighter, janglier, midrangier acoustic sound as opposed to a warmer, bassier, dreadnought-y sound. I don't care for classic country, folk, or bluegrass and that is what those guitars sound like. I prefer more rock guitar so Taylor works for me. I use thin picks on my 414ce along with Elixir Nanoweb Mediums which give me lots of resonance when using a pick and help me cut through. I want an acoustic that is focused mid-to-top with little-to-no bass. That was Glenn Frey's (of Eagles fame) recommendation and I really have to agree with him. They sit in the mix much better and they have that classic Eagles acoustic sound, which is brighter than some may believe.

Happy NGD, love the look of that taylor. I'm taking note of that model on your referral, a cutaway with the playability of an electric is on my list of future wants. Sweet looking case too! Enjoy!

I hadn't really played one either until this past Wednesday. Like Gibsonguitar says, the Taylor guitars just really popped out to me as being brighter and jangle-ier, and that was what I wanted.

For some reason I'm different when it comes to acoustics than I am electrics. I'm completely open to the idea that a really cheap acoustic might be as good to me as an expensive one. I tried hard to find a cheaper model, like Breedlove, Takamine, Seagull, etc that I like as much, but I just couldn't. What seemed to make the biggest difference to me between all of these was playability. A few of the Breedloves had a very sweet sound to them, but just felt bad, for lack of a better word.

Thanks. The way you've described the general differences between Martin's and Taylor's is the way it was described to me, and what I heard also, upon trying them myself.

Man, I'm not sure if I could with mediums on my acoustics unless I tuned down or was only playing open-position chords. I'm playing on Lights now, and even those can feel very very heavy to me, as compared to the 10s I'm used to on electrics. In other words, bought the guitar yesterday, and my fingertips feel like they gone over a cheese grader by today...

Re: NGD - Taylor acoustic

Just put this little demo together today. It's so nice outside, I had the door open and some breezes came through, causing some ruffling....but anyway...another lazy sunday production

Re: NGD - Taylor acoustic

Welcome to the world of Taylor Evan! They are very nice and all I seek out in acoustics as well (although I like the bass to be strong...).
Be sure to register it with Taylor, I'm assuming it's a new one. You'll get the lifetime warranty and the "Wood and Steel" magazine every couple months to keep you up to date on what's going on with Taylor, a very cool, innovative company.
