So my dad bought this random guitar..
Hey guys. My dad bought this guitar on ebay sold as a vintage electric guitar. We have no idea what it is, but apparently its old! Here is the ebay listing: eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices
Item number: 380416060007 (not sure if you can get to it with these) Anyways, Im just trying to figure out what it is! It should be here before my birthday (the 15th) so I will further examine it then. But I was just wondering if anyone here could take a look and help lead me on the right track at least. Thanks guys! Ty

Re: So my dad bought this random guitar..
That was one of my original thoughts. Theres no name or anything on it though. No markings whatsoever said the listing. But when I get it, I was planning on taking it apart to see if I could find myself any clues.

Re: So my dad bought this random guitar..
That's a late 60's Teisco. Not sure of the model, but you can tell by the truss rod cover. There are many variants with the metal string retainer. And companies like Kawai and Encore had similar TRC's. That's the only thing that didn't seem to vary much from one company to another. Does the bridge have any screws missing? It looks like it had the "Ash tray" cover over it. That's a nice piece. There are a few sites that's all about vintage Japanese guitars like this. You may even find catalog information on it. Good luck!

Re: So my dad bought this random guitar..
Started to dig up some info. Cant find too much info on that exact guitar. Seen a few that are similar, but nothing with the same cutaway. Im looking for a value on it. I know its not going to be much at all, but hopefully its worth the 150 we paid for it!

Re: So my dad bought this random guitar..
The 60's Japanese guitars were branded by many names. Teisco should have a badge on the headstock and usually had unfinished multi ply necks.
To be honest it could be one of a dozen different manufacturers. The neck plate looks like a Matsumoko possibly or a Hondo its really hard to tell. The pick ups are single coil and great to record with they are very clean sounding. Sorry I can't be of some help.Maybe when you get it take a lot of pics with it apart and maybe someone will know what it is. |

Re: So my dad bought this random guitar..
Yeah that surely looks like a Tiesco. As others have said, Teisco made guitar for a whole lot of different folks. The headstock could say just about anything.
They can sound pretty good. They are cheap guitars that were cheap to begin with. But always some fun. I recently made a copy of one with vintage look and actual vintage pickups and switchplate, but with a great body and neck. It is fun guitar to play. That is a decent market price for that guitar. If he decides he doesn't like it and wants to sell it, he should be able to get his money back. |

Kent, teisco, etc.- all about the same, and this is one of them (maybe even a hagstrom if you look at some of the vintage ones, but more along the lines of kent and teisco).

Re: So my dad bought this random guitar..
All of what the guys are saying is true.
But let me say this about it's value. It can be looked at a couple of ways. And that's something you must decide for yourself. If you're planning to keep it as a collector's item, then it's imortant to know exactly which model it is. Value can be looked at in terms of dollar value of that market. For $150, that's around the average for some of these guitars, but you won't know for sure until you can get a model number. The Teisco Del Ray still has some value because it's supposedly one of the "best" Teisco's. For all you know, yours may be built better or have better quality parts. But if that guitar feels good in your hands, and plays well, then it's value is extremely high. I will be the first to tell you, that I played quite a few "POS" guitars that played just as good, and in some cases, BETTER than some of their more expensive counterparts. Not implying that yours is in the category of POS, not at all. I'm just saying don't be surprised if you end up really bonding with it. Get it, play it, enjoy it. Make her feel at home with her new family!

Man, do we have a great bunch of experts here. But I'm still trying to figure out what's even remotely "random" about it.

Re: So my dad bought this random guitar..
I've had several in for repairs like that..
I want to say its a "Zim-Gar" those had the same headstock and metal tag on the headstock (or maybe chromed plastic) that said "ZIM-GAR" that often falls off. Could be a NUMBER of brand names though.. |
