Cheap Shredder Guitars?
Looking at suggestions for a cheap shredder style guitar, must have a Floyd Rose of some sort.
Current ones I'm considering, LTD M-103FM and BC Rich ASM Standard, both are really cheap, but wondering just how crappy they would be!?!? Budget is like $300, I know that's cheap, but I just want something to play around on right now.

Re: Cheap Shredder Guitars?
Why don't you get an Ibanez?
They have many 'cheap shredder' guitars.

Re: Cheap Shredder Guitars?
I found an '86 Charvel Model 2 for $200. They are fantastic guitars. '86-'89 is your best bet. Basswood body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard w/ jumbo nickel frets. They are excellent quality.
![]() Mine came with a Kahler trem which was actually very good, but I mounted an original Floyd myself. The '87 up models have the Jackson JT-6 Floyd, which some prefer over an original Floyd. It's a Schaller style Floyd with tuners on back instead of on top. http://www.charvelusa.com/charvel_model_series.html

Re: Cheap Shredder Guitars?
Yeah, man there are a lot of less expensive shredders out there.
I was into Long & McQuade yesterday and they had all kinds of Ibanez & Jacksons, Kramers in that $300 to $400 price range. And these are new. Probably thousands of them on Ebay or Craigslist or Kijijji. Thing about a shredder....that neck has got to feel right right away. If it doesn't...chances are it won't

Re: Cheap Shredder Guitars?
I was at guitar center a couple of weeks ago and they had the Ibanez RG120 on sale for $108 brand new. It doesn't meet your criteria, as it doesn't have a Floyd (it has a FAT20, basically a two point non-locking trem made to look "Floyd-y) but it has a really, really good Wizard neck on it. I couldn't resist it for the price.
In all honesty, the weakest part in my eyes is the pickups. Fizzy and not a whole lot of definition or sustain. I can live with the trem, I did restring and full setup, put some graphite in the nut slots and it works fine for stuff you'd do with a vintage unit. Long story short, even the cheap Ibanez models have really nice necks on them, but even some of the models up beyond your price range still have these (INF) pickups. I bought the 120 as a cheap "sit around" shredder as i was looking for something with a fast neck more comfortable and easier to practice on than my Rhoads (which has a Floyd). I played an ASM-1 the same day and it was much more poorly built than the Ibanez. Not sure if the Standard is significantly better. I agree with all those saying look for a used 80s/90s shredder in your price range. It would be a lot more guitar for the money. |

Re: Cheap Shredder Guitars?
Lots of them in pawn shops go have a look.
Ibanez RG's are pretty good if they have the edge trem.Indonesian Ibanez's stay away from go Korean or made in Japan. Charvel's from the 80's kick ass,Jackson's from the 90's with the JT 580 LP trem are solid shredders too. LTD's tend to have nice necks but the trems are pretty lackluster IMO. $300.00 is doable but you have to look around. My opinion is hunt the used rack at GC, the local mom and pop music stores, pawn shops. I have been dealing in shredder guitars for a long time so I keep my eyes open and there are lots of great low buck ones out there. |

Re: Cheap Shredder Guitars?
The Japanese built 500 & 700 series Ibanez RGs are hard to beat and are very affordable used. I've got a RG520QSB that is a great player with a mahogany body, super fast wizard neck and the original edge trem (one of the best ever made).

Re: Cheap Shredder Guitars?
That's why I snatched it up. I bought an '86 Model 3 brand new, had that guitar for many, many years. I knew how good they are.

Re: Cheap Shredder Guitars?
Look for 1980's Peaveys..Tracer, Destiny, Patriots, several other models...US made, very solid and fine playing necks, great hardware, good pups when they are set up right. Came with Floyds or Kahler Spiders.
I have 2 Tracers I recently bought on eBay, both together around $475, both with factory hard cases. Can't beat them. The first one is a 90 something, with a Floyd. Beautiful 24 fret rosewood board-wine metalflake paint. The funny one is a 89, with a Kahler Spyder. 22 fret rosewood board and a coil splitter on the HB. i have it strung upside down cause its a lefty. This one is one of my favorite guitars, and I'v only had it a few weeks. Check them out...Great and under rated and under priced. mark

Re: Cheap Shredder Guitars?
The Ibanez RG line is a fairly cheap, yet good quality line. I got my 350DX for $420 new, so used should be in your price range. Fastest neck I've ever played. It also comes in Black, RG350EX.

Re: Cheap Shredder Guitars?
if you can find an 80's ibanez rg 760 or 770 for 300 now- buy it- they have gone up in value- now the 90's ibanez rg 760 and 770 are still around 400 - a decade makes a difference

Re: Cheap Shredder Guitars?
I'd definitely go with an ibanez rg or even xavier from GFS as I've heard great things about some of these instruments one of which is below:the xv-890... comes with a floyd rose special and GFS pickups which i've heard are pretty decent and only costs 240.

Re: Cheap Shredder Guitars?
I played one of these yesterday and it has the fastest neck I've ever played on! I found a used one for $300, but the guy won't reply to me!! That is a serious pet peeve of mine, why post something for sale if you don't want to sell it?
What is the Tremolo like on them? I couldn't really beat on it in the store, so just wondering how it holds up?

Re: Cheap Shredder Guitars?
You should check out some ltd's. They are sweet. Here is a pic of a mh-301 I used to have. Coil splitting, or tapping .... cant remember. Double binding, flamed top with great finish, neck thru ... the works
I picked mine up used in mint condition for $200 on cl It was a great looking and playing guitar. I would still have it but I let it go in part of a trade towards an explorer.
