Danelectro 59 DC
Hello,
Since i've seen Jimmy Page play Kashmir on his black Dano in several videos including "it might get loud", I 'm really thinking about buying one from current production (chinese) as an affordable strange axe . What do you guys think about those guitars? does someone owns one and could tell me what he thinks about it? I have seen there are several models... like this one: Danelectro DE 59 DANO BLACK - Cyberstore Thomann Français this one: Danelectro DE 59 DC M BLACK - Cyberstore Thomann Français if someone can give me an opinion...

Re: Danelectro 59 DC
I myself have the 59dc modified (second link )
Which has the correct headstock, stacked pots and the jack in the scratchplate . Just like the original. And has buffed up pickups, so it overdrives a bit faster. Instand Kashmir ![]() And what i think is much better, a badass bridge. I really like this guitar, i recommand this one! Oh... And it's a unoffical Jimmy Page model! Cheers |

Re: Danelectro 59 DC
I played an original Dano Longhorn bass for about 12 years, starting in 1962. They are surprisingly good instruments, and the best argument against "tone wood"...I have a DC 59 12 string on backorder at this very moment, and I will probably buy a 6 string later this year as well.
They are way way better than they look, and they record really well. mark

Re: Danelectro 59 DC
I had a U2 model in the late 90s (the inexpensive reissue ones) and I loved it. I eventually made some money and bought some higher priced guitars but I still remember that the Dano played awesome and I shouldn't have gotten rid of it.

Re: Danelectro 59 DC
I played my Dano for over 12 years in bar bands. It had Kluson tuners and I had no problems with it as far as breaking anything...I had to adjust the bridge a few times over the years, but that is all I recall doing with it.
Bought it used in PA in '62, sold it CA in '75. A good, solid bass. mark

Re: Danelectro 59 DC
They're fine for what they are. The fingerboards feel really cheap and actually affected my playing. Feels too much like slick plastic.
Try finding one of the Korean, early 90s version. They were better made. If you're buying one of the modern Chinese makes, I would try picking one up used as I don't think they're worth paying full retail. |

Re: Danelectro 59 DC
Have to add to those saying that if you cant get an original vintage Danelectro, the Korean/Indonesian ones are the next best thing. Well made, more faithful to the originals, and nicer neck materials etc.
I have a 1998 Korean U2, compared to the recent reissues it is a different beast IMO.

Re: Danelectro 59 DC
I bought this Danelectro DC-3 new back in about 1998 as just a fun surfy type funky guitar. I've almost traded it in a couple of times in the past, and let me tell you, I'm sure glad I didn't. It is a great playing, fun little guitar with a wide variety of sounds. The neck plays great, and I haven't had a bit of trouble with it. I'd love to put up a short sound clip of a song my old band did if I could figure out how to do just part of it.

Re: Danelectro 59 DC
Smokehouse,
Can you describe the sound of each pickup position? It looks interesting. I don't like starts much and that guitar seems like a good alternative.

Well finally able to upload a little intro from an original cut called "Rode Me" from my old band Smokehouse. This is the DC-3 played through a 1966 Fender Super Reverb with some light Tube Screamers involved. This is the bridge and middle pickup. The guitar can play the same pickup combinations as a strat, but also can play the bridge and neck pickup, and all pickups at once in parallel (louder). You won't get a Strat "quack", but you have a lot of tonal variations and it plays well. As I said before, because of the cheap, hollow body, it is a somewhat loud guitar unplugged compared to a Strat or LesPaul. It is a fun, decently made guitar with a nice playing neck. By the way, the guitars from this time-frame feel WAY better to me than the more recent offerings. I don't really care that much for the recent ones. They just don't feel or sound the same to me.
