DIY guitar kits ??

Anyone have any experience with DIY guitar kits ??
I'm just interested to build my own for the first time.

I'm looking at this strikemaster guitar kit
Guitar Kit - Fender Stratocaster style Build Your Own Guitar Kit

cant find much info on it, but it looks good from the pictures.
Very likely to replace the pickguard, pickups, tunners and tremolo

Isnt there use to be a DIY page on this forum from memory ? I cant find it anymore

Re: DIY guitar kits ??

I did a Saga PRS build one time, I was pretty pleased with the results. It was fun to build and a nice feeling to have a guitar that you put together

Re: DIY guitar kits ??

Personally I'd never buy a "kit" guitar though I'd go straight for a partscaster.
Twice the price but 10 times the quality

Re: DIY guitar kits ??

but getting parts might get more expensive then buying stock and also you dont get to do your own paintwork.

spending $135 on a kit then doing this is honestly quite ridiculous.

or give me $135 for an old neck & body I use to practice painting on!at least it'll be real maple & alder....

Re: DIY guitar kits ??

This is just my personal take. But it's influenced by experience. This is based on the Strat-style kits.

You'd think that because it's a "kit", that the body and neck are going to be a perfect fit. That's NOT always the case. Many times, the neck pocket has to be sanded, and sometimes routed to get the neck to seat properly. Add that to the fact that you're going to be getting "Below average quality" components. It will be much more cost-efficient to find a loaded Squier body and find a neck to match. And the quality is probably going to be better than what you'd get in the average kit. I mean, why spend $150 or more for a kit ahen you're going to upgrade the guts because they're inferior to the most basic Squier. I'd suggest going the "Partscaster" route. You'll have much more control of the quality you'll be receiving. And it will make for a great looking, sounding, and playing fiddle!!!

Re: DIY guitar kits ??

I've seen plenty of kits, from BYO, GFS, Bulldogs, Saga.. you name it. I love wood working so this is something I enjoy, trying to build a guitar, but the kits are a RIP OFF for the most part.

Get a BYO and your better pray. Mounting holes out of alignment, crappy wood, and a lousy coat of "sealer" you will need to remove through some serious (messy) sanding. Not to mention the fact the wood is as low grade as it can be. Pickguard? The BYO comes with some thick plastic somebody cut into a pickguard using a dull scroll saw, extremely poor quality.

Then you get Guitar Fetish. They change what they sell so much you'll have to wonder where the hell they buy from. Product is CRAPPY for the most part. Sure you can make them look ok, but they are crappy wood with poor cuts.

Bulldogs are good, some are really great. No hardware there so you don't have any throw away crap, but they are expensive.

The hardware for the most part is shit. I mean, it's the same thing that comes with the lowest end Chinese guitars. But what does it matter, you won't make it to that part because the holes are misaligned to begin with in many cases.

GFS sells Tele necks for example, some fit the Tele body, some don't. It's a lucky shot. I saw a body and the holes for the strings didn't match the correct bridge location. What's the deal there?

I read some bad reviews about them, but the only decent kit I've seen thus far is a Grizly Strat kit. I was impressed by the neck, it was a raw neck but the frets were smooth and the neck fit not just right, but tight, into the pocket. I guess it helps the owner of that power tool outfit is also a guitar making nut.

But overal, if you love wood working invest in some tools and take it slow, build your stuff from the ground up. If you want a custom instrument that's top of the line get Warmoth parts and have at it. You won't save any money, but you'll end up with a real good quality guitar that you put together yourself.

Re: DIY guitar kits ??

If you need any info regarding DIY stuff send me a PM.

It's tempting to buy a kit, and they're a good way to learn refinishing and even trouble shooting. But if you wanna end up with a good guitar you need to really pay attention to what you buy and you need to get familiar with wood working techniques.

I built the strat in my avatar... $400 for the whole thing.

Just was patient with ebay deals.

Allparts unfinished neck

all Fender hardware except for graphtech nut and tree and fralin blender pot
boutique set of pups (not a well known winder)
a couple bottles of tru-oil
