NBD: Japanese Beatle bass copy...for $20!

My wife, son, and I stopped by a flea market today to do some browsing. I spotted this little beauty out of the corner of my eye:

A quick run to an ATM later, and I had her for just $20.

The guy selling it told me that it doesn't work, but I think the output jack just needs to be reconnected or replaced. It needs a setup too, so I might just take it to a tech for some TLC. It's very loud acoustically; I could probably keep up with a quiet acoustic jam.

I even got a case with it, although this one looks like it's been through a war zone.

Very sweet. My dad still has his 64 Hofner. Looks pretty damn close.

Nice score. I will laugh if it is just a cold solder joint or a loose connection

I really hope this is the case. Those p'ups are known for short-out after some twelve+ years due to internal corrosion. If that's the case, there's nothing you can do about it. The best you can do is to get new p'ups for it, as the cost to rewind'em is too high.

HTH,

Heck, for 20.00 I wouldn't care if it worked. I'd hang it on the wall. Nice find.

$20 with a case. Nice find. Any clues as to who made it and when?

Very nice score.

But seriously; Dude, you went to a flea market without $20 in your pocket?

Just pulling your leg. Great deal!

Re: NBD: Japanese Beatle bass copy...for $20!

Very cool! I got a similar one for Xmas in '68. Recorded bass parts with it for the next 20 or so years. My control panel was slightly different than yours and took a bit of fiddling to get the right sound, but when dialed in, it was the shit.

Have a great time with yours!

Here's a pic of mine from 1971. I had used the guitar in a high school tv show a couple weeks before, and we went crazy with black tape trying to cut the lens flares down!

Re: NBD: Japanese Beatle bass copy...for $20!

Thanks everyone.

I'll see if I can take it in this weekend to get it checked over. The bass is fine structurally, so I just need to get the electronics working. If the pickups are shot, I'll look into replacements, although I would rather not spend a fortune fixing this up. Allparts has an inexpensive replacement, although I would need to double check to make sure it fits this bass.

I'd say that even if you spring for two pickups and new switches, you'll still be ahead of the game at this point.

I'm betting though, that it's a switch or two instead, they sometimes "go out" from a lack of use and a lack of cleaning (gotta scrape off the grunge once in a while).
