Ive put these two elsewhere on the forum, but I'm glad this thread was bumped up, cos it gives me a chance to show 'em again.

WOW! love those 2 guitars pictured here! 'spotlight special' LP?
I have a 65 2 [humbucking]PU MM, LOVE the neck! the previous owner did the mods, put on grovers, and a TOM/STOPTAIL setup, so basically, it's an SG with a MM body. [as opposed to the 66 MMs which are an MM with the SG body..]
I also LOVE your WOODY super champ! I have a standard one from 84.

Thanks. I've owned the MM since 1977 and I bought the Spotlight new in 1983 and picked up the Champ at the same time. Back to the MM you own, can you post a pic? Love to see it. You are right about the necks. They are surprisingly playable.

on the left is the 67 MM [sg shape] refinished in Pelham blue modded with p-90s
it WAS originally the same color, but the prev owner refinned the neck in blue was well [usually the necks on those MMs are left 'natural'].

on the right, is my 65 MM that the prev owner modded with Grovers, a TOM/Stoptail, custom pickguard, and Humbuckers. So, basically it's an SG but with a 65 MM body!

THOSE ARE SWEET!! Anyone I've ever let play the MM, that's never had their hands around a 65 (or around that era before), is just blown away. We all think that "our guitars" are "the one", but these early models are really special. They're not LP's, never going to be, but they're in a guitar class all their own.

It's not always about "how much will it sell for?". It's about, is it fun to play and do I want to play it. IMHO.

If I could find one like the dual humbuckers, I'd be all over it. They are just asking to be played.

Re: Melody Maker Appreciation Thread~

I restrung both of my Melody Makers last night.

It made me happy.

Holding them and working on them and playing them makes me feel like a kid.

I'm 47 but I feel like a 17 year old when I pick up a Melody Maker.

There is something about the simplicity and there is something about how easy they are to understand that just makes me feel like a happy kid.

Sorry if this sounds goofy but I feel genuinely happy every time that I bang out a tune on these guitars.........

This is my screen saver at my office.......

I can't look at this picture and be sad. I think it's great.

Re: Melody Maker Appreciation Thread~

Finally joined the MM club a few months back.
Just made my first pickup to go on this, P90 wrapped via a power drill. Sounds good so far.

Just need to make a new pickguard to replace the one the last owner added and get a truss rod cover.

Great neck on it, not skinny but thinner than my Orville LPjr neck.

Re: Melody Maker Appreciation Thread~

Hi.
How on earth have I missed this thread? I also love MMs. I have two (and one on its way). The one on the left is a 65 and the other one is a 1989 Pro2. I have bunch of other guitars but if I ad to choose to keep just one it would be the the 65, no hesitation.

The one on its way is a wreck that I plan on restoring. Its a -04 with the P-90 and tuneomatic bridge. Allways wanted one of these and a project is allways fun.

Jesus, that guitar is a 2004? What did the previous owner do to the thing?

Re: Melody Maker Appreciation Thread~

I recently purchased an ice tea traditional, I thought my poor raw worn white melody maker would be mothballed!!! However I still find myself been drawn back to it.

I'm simplistic design, and weight make it a joy, to play. It's now just starting to wear in places, and the mahogany showing through the white looks sweet. I love my melody maker!! It's a keeper.

Thanks, it was a fun project to do. The simple design and the high quality of the guitar to start with made it remarkably easy to work with.
I noticed that a lot of MM-people also like the juniors, for obvious reasons. Here is mine hanging out with the -65. Great guitar of course but I prefer the MM due mainly to the lighter weight.

My black MM now has a soapbar P90. Had to do a bit of opening out of the pickup slot, but didn't take too long.

Re: Melody Maker Appreciation Thread~

I am a newbie here and a Melody Maker-a-holic.

I have to say that I really love this hacked up JJMM featured below. I know this message was originally posted in 2010, but it would be great to know more about the recipe of this "runaway" beast.

Is that a genuine '72/'73 (ish) era Gibbo embossed humbucker you've installed there? And is the neck pickup from a Recording model?

And what trem unit have you installed? How is the tuning stability with it?

I've got a '68 Pelham Blue MMSG I with a '72 Gibson full sized embossed humbucker (which someone thankully added before I got the guitar) and seeing your Joan Jett model with a similar bridge pickup makes us family by default. I've also got a '65 MMD with two Shaw-era PAF MiniHumbuckers which is a lovely companion to have to the MMSG.

I am so glad to see so many MM Lovers out there. It makes me feel part of a very special family.

The Libertines: Can't Stand Me Now

Carl Barat is sporting a '59 Single Cut MM. His parter in crime, Pete Doherty is sporting a "near relation" of the MM - a fetching batwing Epiphone Olympic.

Pointless bit of trivia: This track was produced by MM Lover (and former member of The Clash) Mick Jones.
