1973 Gibson SG Standard...do you recommend?

For sale locally is a 73 SG Standard. I'm not very familiar with SG's but have read about quality control issues with some Les Pauls of that vintage...plus headstock angle changes, maple necks and production cost saving measures that hurt the overall tone.

What am I looking for before plunking down cash? What do these 73's sell for normally?

Thanks for any info

Yep, better stay away from it, because all Norlins are tone turds and the best thing to do is just burn them all.

Seriously, you believe all that crap?!?

LOL I hear ya. I doubt there is a repulsive Gibson out there! which is why I'm thinking about checking this one out. However since I've never ever played a Gibson SG to compare it to I wouldn't know. I know the resale value for these 70's years are not all that much so I don't want to overspend on something I couldn't resell easily. PLUS I can't afford an earlier model year SG anyhow.

So anyhow the pros and cons, stuff to look for, $ would be helpful.

Thanks

Just make sure it isn't broken or anything major like that. I can't tell you much more, because I've never played a Norlin era SG. Mainly because I don't like how they look. The shape and the bevels got all weird then compared to vintage and current SGs.

I'd get it. Does it have the harmonica bridge? With no issues I'd say $1500 max.

I just got a notice it's up for sale and am awaiting a phone number to meet with the guy. Not even sure what color it is yet. I'll have to see about the bridge. Any significance to having that type?

Thanks

I used to own a '73 SG Standard that had a Bigsby on it. Played really well and sounded great. I would get one again.

No significance really. I just prefer them. Good luck!

In 73 Gibson brought the SG back to something more respectable than the Gawd awful 72 model with the plate mounted controls. If the switches and knobs come from the wood, and there are small block inlays, then it should be good.

Re: 1973 Gibson SG Standard...do you recommend?

Long time lurker 'round here... thought I'd finally register and post...

I have owned a '73 SG Standard since the mid-80s. Hands down, the best guitar I've ever played (IMHO) - thin, fast neck, lightweight, with great PUPs/tone. I own 6 Gibsons, and this one is my baby. I don't play it as much as I'd like, because I've kept it in excellent, all-original (less a fret job), condition, and I'm afraid of doing something bad to it.

Before the economy tanked, I saw these going for near $2000, but more recently at around $1500. If you can grab one in good condition for around that price, I'd highly recommend it!

Great guitars! Just make sure it's not a late '72. They're fugly bastards!!
