ES-335s and the amps that love them

Hey all:

Diceman's new guitar discussion has me appreciating my '66 ES-335 all over again. And it occurs to me that this model is to Gibson what the tele is to Fender ... probably the most versatile guitar they produce, and certainly one of the most amp friendly.

For a longtime my fave combination was the 335 into a Twilighter (magnatone) 260, via reverb and clean boost. Found another winner tonight. Plugged into a '57 lo power tweed twin via clean boost, Roland RE-201 tape echo, then Victoria Reverberato. What a sound! Have to get a clip of this.

What amps do you ES-335 owners favor?

Re: ES-335s and the amps that love them

I'm a new ES-335 owner, but spent a few hours today and this past week playing into a Victoria 45410 (Bassman). Clapton in Cream, Pete Townshend in the Who, even Hendrix at Woodstock...I get very credible results and I just love the tonaliscious results.

Having said that, I think it would go well with a Deluxe, a Dumble Overdrive Special clone (Ceriatone?) or a JTM45 (or clone). It truly is an amazingly all-around guitar. It flat whomps in leads and rhythms in my Bassman. It says: "I will ROCK you!"

BTW, I'm playing into a Fulltone OCD, ZVex Box of Rock and a Boss DD-7 Delay.

The guy that I play with some weekends has an original '59 tobacco burst 335 that he runs through a Boss Blues Driver into a a 60-something Fender Princeton blackface. The first time I heard it, I almost fell over because of the tone...pure beauty.

Clapton and others used Marshall stacks to great effect whilst slinging a 335.

Re: ES-335s and the amps that love them

I run my 335 through a nice fender super reverb RI and love the tone. I have had good results with a fender hot rod (with jensen speaker) as well. Run a 330, a 345, and a 135 through the same amps and love the tone!

Overdriver.....that's a great clip of Eric.....on fire for a change!

That guitar brings out the old Eric and I wish he would use it more often!

Just look at the swagger when he plays it.....just like the old days.

I've got an old ('71) Carvin solid state amp (around 175W RMS) -- cabinet is a ported 2x15" (Altec Lansing 418's) with a mid/high sectoral horn. Dang thing is about 48" x 30". I think that's my 335's favorite.

Yes indeed . and IMO he loves doing the Freddie King thing. Most of his covers of Freddie IMO bring out the best in him. IDK but I think maybe Ferddie had the most infulence on Eric. Shouldn't say really cause I never talked to the man, but seems so IMO ya can feel it when he dies a Freddie tune.

Re: ES-335s and the amps that love them

I'm playing my 335 into a 67 Fender Silverface Deluxe Reverb w/67 Jensen C12NA plugged into a 68 Fender Bandmaster Cab with two 67 Jensen C12NA 12" Speakers. To me, it sounds so natural, like they were meant for each other. These speakers work extremely well with Humbuckers or Single coils. As for the Amp, what can I say, it's just pure Vintage tone all the way. 335's are naturally darker sounding guitars. Fender amps make them come alive.

Re: ES-335s and the amps that love them

I play mine through a 64 DR, a 59 Champ, and a bunch of different newer amps... Blues Deluxe, Blues Jr., Victoria Deluxe.

They sound great through anything.

Hello Tom

Curious how your Gibson ES 335 sounds using your 59 champ amplifier does it breakup too quickly once the volume is up .

Ive been thinking of getting a 57 champ

Thanks

Both my 335 and my 135 (as well as others) love this Blues Deluxe RI with Eminence Cannabis Rex speaker, JJ 6L6GC, and Tung-Sol RI 12AX7's.

It probably breaks up a little earlier than I'd like, but what a cool sound. It is pretty controllable with the Vol pot on the guitar though. So I wouldn't shy away from one on that basis.

Re: ES-335s and the amps that love them

Hello Tom

Thats what I wanted to hear because most likely next week I will get the Fender 57 tweed champ amplifier .

I have used my tweed bassman -twin - deluxe and also have a tweed blues junior nos and they all sound great but up to this point the tweed deluxe is my favorite with all my guitars .

Like to get the champ for recording and just a amp to have anywhere in the house because its small does not take up any room and sounds sweet and its gets nasty and growls when you pull its tail .

The Guitar is an '01 and the Amp is a '74.
