I just bought a new SG! - 1991 '62 Reissue

Australia - your tax's at work. My tax return cheque bought me this beautiful cherry red SG!! It has a wide flat neck, just the way I like it.

I only got it a few hours ago, haven't had time to clean it up yet but it feels & plays brilliantly as is - needs new strings badly but that means that I'd have to stop playing it while I changed 'em.

Gibson logo freaks note - this has no dot over the i, and the 'open' b & o. Just thought I'd mention that before some know nothing yells "fake!!!" because they've never seen one. That's how they did it in 1991!

Anyway - on with the pics!!

Beautiful SG! I almost pulled the trigger on an ebay one a few months ago but I was gun shy cause I have never played the older 62. That guitar is sweet! Congrats!

ETA: do you know what pickups it came with? Thanks

Re: I just bought a new SG! - 1991 '62 Reissue

Thanks for noticing guys, my threads always seem incredibly popular!!

It's a nice guitar, especially at the price I paid. It has Gibson '57 Classic pickups. It's pretty well the same specs as the '61 reissue - I believe that the neck profile and joint is the only difference (and maybe the bridge saddles).

It seems that I may have to do something with the wiring/pots, especially for the neck pickup. They're a bit shaky and the neck p/u is noticeablely quieter. I'll be pulling it apart and cleaning it up as best I can shortly.

Beuatiful SG circusboy. Is that nickel hardware I see tarnishing nicely, or is it just the lighting? Anyway, the proof is in the playing, to paraphrase a cliche, and I'm glad you say she measures up there too.

And I for one have no problem with my taxes helping players buy Gibsons. I guess I should get off my arse and do my tax return!

Looks great! The nitro must have sunk very nicely in all these years. Congrats!

Re: I just bought a new SG! - 1991 '62 Reissue

Yep, the nickel has quite a bit of tarnish, and it's very light. I'm pretty happy with it. It has been is storage for some time prior to me buying it on Friday and it needs some TLC.

I been basically at work since I bought it, now I've got 24 hours off (!!!), so I'll finally be able to sort it out. Change the strings, have a go at the intonation, lemon oil on the fret board, set pickup heights, get inside with the contact cleaner and get rid of the grunge that I'm sure is inside.....and last of all polish the guitar!

So obviously it wasn't exactly set up when I got it - but it still feels great. I think it will be killer with a little work. I always reckon it's much more fun to get a good second hand guitar and sort it out...........

I can never keep SG's sorted out - does the '62 have the bigger neck?

No, it has the same profile as the 61 RI. Thin, and wide.

Nice RI ya got there CB. I got one too and I love it. Those 57 Classics sound sweet !
