Re: come on i wanna see those flying V's
It is a very neat guitar. The finish is a satin metallic sparkle blue, pickguard and weird trussrod cover are aluminum. And those big funky knobs are funny.
At the same time I picked up an Explorer from the same series. The V is my favorite but both are pretty awesome to play. ![]() ![]() Gibson introduces this latest futuristric custom Flying V with the creation of 4 new colors.
SATIN METALLIC FINISH MODELS It's appropriate that guitars that were originally designed to reflect the lines of the automobiles would finally get finishes that do the same. Each guitar in this collection of three of Gibson's most "futuristic" models-the Explorer, Flying V, and Futura-has several intriguing appointments, but none more immediately noticeable than the finish. "I read a lot of hot rod and street car magazines, and metallic colors like these are the trend in car restoration right now," says finish master Mick McGuire in reference to the metallic copper, silver, green, and blue finishes found in this collection. Also notable on these guitars are the aluminum pickguard and truss rod covers (designed by engineer John McGuire and the Pro Shop's Bill Jancar, respectively) and the large, retro-style volume and tone knobs. John McGuire said, "They're similar to some knobs Edwin (Wilson, Historic Program manager) brought back from Japan, and they really remind me of old stereo knobs. It's fitting that these three guitars, with body shapes designed to echo the lines and curves of the automobiles of the '50s, should finally get finish colors to complete that connection. Each of the three guitars will have a limited run of 60 (15 in each color). The Custom Shop will offer the Explorer models in August, the Flying V models in September and the Futura models in October. Materials: Two-piece mahogany body, one-piece mahogany neck Binding: None Nut Width: 1.687 nut, 2.602 12th fret Scale Length: 24 3/4" Hardware: Chrome Bridge/Tailpiece: Chrome ABR, v shaped anchor plate Pickups: Chrome '57 Classic humbuckers Controls: Two volume, two tone, three-way switch Fingerboard: Rosewood with pearloid dots Finishes: Satin Green Metallic, Satin Copper Metallic, Satin Blue Metallic, Satin Silver Metallic Other:Aluminum pickguard and truss rod cover COLLATERAL: Custom case, certificate of authenticity, Custom care kit |

Wow man, that is some seriously nice stuff you have there. I can imagine they were pretty pricey. What's the history of the Futura? Came out in '58 also? Same exact as Explorer but with the split headstock? I am very intrigued. Out of all the selections though, I'd take the V in the blue.

Here is my 1979 V2 and my 1975 V. The V2 deliver an incredibly unique voice.I really like its versatility.

Re: come on i wanna see those flying V's
I seriously had a dream about finding a V in a dumpster at some school yesterday..... It was a V with a shovel headstock.... Yes like a shovel you dig with. It was so weird and random., But i want a V now

Re: come on i wanna see those flying V's
My homemade V 67 style. I made this guitar on the cheap as a practice for Les Paul building. The pickups are a cheap Golden Age or Era stew mac in the neck and a junk 12$ humbucker I got off ebay years ago. I put an Alnico 5 magnet in it and it sounds alright. Even with low output humbuckers and a vibrato this guitar makes very nice metal sounds. Must be the shape. Also I finally got the Isle of Wight Red House sound out this guitar. Magic. -Matt

Re: come on i wanna see those flying V's
I don't have a Flying V, But I MUST know the story behind that albino Les Paul!
I've been looking for one of those things to mod forever.. That looks like a "Classic White" one not the *over produced* "Alpine White" ones. |

Re: come on i wanna see those flying V's
'76 Ibanez Rocket Roll back in my USCG days. I got that Guitar at the old Norman's Rare Guitars for 400 bucks
![]() I had a couple white '67 reissues. The last one I sold to raise money to buy a 50's LP jr. ,but Billie Joe ended up buying the jr from under me I wanted to buy Little Jimmy King's sunburst '67 ri when he was livin ,but we never got together on that I whip out the faux Korina Chubby every once in awhile ![]()

Re: come on i wanna see those flying V's
that Ibanez is sweet! My older cousin has one he got in 1980 at Dons music store in Greenville NC. I remember the day he got it. He just asked to put it on layaway and Don told him if he put money down he could take the guitar that day and pay payments.....that was 1980. I've tried to get him to sell it to me with no luck

Re: come on i wanna see those flying V's
My '93 Rudolf Schenker V. I have the signed original pickguard tucked away, and put a Terrapin pickguard on it so I can play it once in a while.
![]() My '78 Flying V2. The "Boomerang" pickups, are two three pole pickups that are supposed to work similar to a humbucker. I finally figured out if you put this through an AC-30 turned up to 11, and work the guitar's knobs, it will slay any Tele in a mix. It likes low to mid watt amps turned up LOUD. It loses character when put into a master volume amp like a Marshall JMP.
