SG with a 5 pc body?

My 04 Standard is ebony, but the finish has sunk into the grain and I can see the seams where the wood joins together. I counted 5 pieces.

Is that crazy or what? Kind of annoys me

Re: SG with a 5 pc body?

It's the best sounding guitar I've ever owned! But something makes me think it won't keep its value as well. I've seldom seen a 3 pc special faded sg body, let alone a Standard.

Re: SG with a 5 pc body?

If you bought it to play, then it has EXCELLENT value to you. If you bought it for an investment, you bought the wrong model to begin with.
PLAY IT!!!!

Re: SG with a 5 pc body?

As long as it isn't plywood, it isn't the biggest deal, espicially if it sounds fine to you...

If it sounds good, why should it bother you it uses 5 peices.

7 pieces faded were sighted.

I have/had several 1 piece body guitars, but the killers are all patchwork.

Re: SG with a 5 pc body?

I emailed Gibson some time back asking about different sg's and how many pieces of wood were used in the bodies.
this is the reply I received:

1st reponse:Hello,
Thanks for writing! Regarding your questions:

1 and 2: Yes, both the Standard and 61 Reissue are 1-piece bodies

3: The SG Special models are multi-piece construction.

4: The overall quality of the wood will be the same for all of them, though the most cosmetically appealing and larger pieces are reserved for the higher level instruments- i.e. Standard, 61 Reissue

2nd response;Hello,
I wanted to revise a bit of information I noticed in this email, and apologize for the mistake. The SG Standard model can have up to a 2-piece body, but there are many made that may have a 1-piece body. Sorry for the confusion, and I hope this helps!
Best regards,

3rd response"Hello,
The Special models will always be multiple piece bodies. Thank you.

Over at IIRC HC there was somebody with a 4-piece SG Standard just this week.

Gibson will tell you any lame thing if the day is too long.

Re: SG with a 5 pc body?

I also own a multi piece Standard. Mine's an 04 as well and the body is 6 pieces! I love the guitar BUT if a Standard really is supposed to be no more than 2 pieces, per Gibson's email earlier referenced, hard to not feel a little screwed, like I didn't completely get what I paid for.

- gbenson, I look forward to hearing Gibson's response to your email.

Here's a few pictures. Hard to get all the joints to show in the pictures, so in the first picture I put some arrows on the bottom of the guitar. 5 joints, 6 total pieces make up the body.

Re: SG with a 5 pc body?

Funky.

Gibson seems to have forgotten to put this one into the "I see a red guitar and I want to see it painted black" pile.

Can I say liars?

Re: SG with a 5 pc body?

I've gotten over it quite a bit since posting. Gibson told me it's normal to have multi-piece bodies. Oooooooohhh wellll. I play it every day now.

ClarenceRodSteele, those are some pretty pieces of mahogany-- I love that slightly "swirl-y" grain pattern.

Thanks - Yeah, I like the grain too. In normal viewing most of the joints aren't obvious and blend in with the grain.
