Ditto. I've watched this show (not this episode) before and depending on who the guest is, it's usually a "Darryl Hall" show. That said, I watched the first song (and will come back) but yeah, that's a pretty sweet SG Billy has, but did anyone else notice that Epi Sherry getting a workout from the other guitar player?

LOL, yeah, I know. Sometimes it's difficult to make a point in print. What I meant was I've seen some of his shows where some guests of "lesser status" shall we say, certainly not a Billy or Joe Walsh, and Daryl gets most of the attention. Maybe I'm biased. Mrs G and I got tix to a Hall and Oates concert a couple years ago as a gift. Not a bad show, but it didn't take long to realize that Hall and Oates is really Hall and Oates if you get my drift.

Looks like a Standard/'61 SG, no guard, vol and tone holes plugged with chrome cap and a blend pot where the switch is normally. Sounds really cool. The epi "sherry" sounds great too. I think he's running through the Dr.Z sweet heavenly tones right there!

Re: Billy Gibbons Plays a Sweet SG on Live From Daryl's House

He had a JCM800 head sitting on a cab behind him. I think the Dr Z was for the other guitarist beside him. Both sounded excellent. Pretty sure he couldn't crank that JCM at all in there as his tone was cleaner than his usual self. Either way sounded great. Wish I could have 1/4 of his talent. I'm glad he put that hh tele down after that second song. It just didn't sound as "right" as the SG for his style. IMHO

I believe that Billy was playing out of the Magnatone combo. In one of the latest "Rig Rundown" videos, his tech was talking about the custom prototypes that may become sig. models.

Re: Billy Gibbons Plays a Sweet SG on Live From Daryl's House

I usually just stumble onto this show late at night. It is always a treat to see "real" musicians playing their own instruments and just jamming. I wonder how much they really have to rehearse in advance. Something tells me they don't have to go through it to many times before they get a keeper for the show. Thanks for posting.

Re: Billy Gibbons Plays a Sweet SG on Live From Daryl's House

I actually e-mailed the show and asked about how many "takes" they do - the said they are very well prepared by Paul Pesco and try very hard to nail it on the first take and do so 90% of the time.

Those are some very primo musicians at that gig.

I wonder what that pays??!!

Re: Billy Gibbons Plays a Sweet SG on Live From Daryl's House

I simply love the "sparse" way that Billy plays. . . he hits notes at the right time and they seem to be the right note.

The man has rhythm coming out of his pores.

I've been a fan of ZZ Top since "First Album" when I heard "Just Got Paid" for the first time. . . but even if you're not a fan of their style of music - you simply have to marvel at how he can say so much with so few strokes of his pick!!

Hey PMFJI - nobody has appeared to answer but I'm pretty sure it's a "Palm Pedal" type of device. Duesenberg makes one called a "multi-bender" - Bigsby made (or more accurately- licensed) one, Hipshot made (or licenses) something similar - and others have taken the idea to run with it. If you search on YouTube you'll come across some pretty convincing vids - especially when they put them on a lap steel, a good operator really can pull off realistic pedal steel licks - you can set up the benders to dupe what the A-B pedals on an E9 pedal steel do - takes you between the I and IV chords essentially. Solid info on what's available today brand-new is sketchy - I don't think they fly off the shelves and are probably a lot of trouble to inventory and service, so the vendors come and go.

Here's the Duesenberg Multibender on a lap steel - I think this might be my favorite of the lot - prob. the most expensive though... Lapsteel Waltz with Duesenberg Multibender - YouTube

Here's a link to a custom palm pedal maker -
Home

I'm obsessed with the 'real' pedal steel and what that crazy instrument is capable of- it's ironic that (arguably) the most mechanically complicated, and difficult to master - instrument on the planet winds up playing some of the least-complicated music... but I digress. I'm always on the lookout for similar contraptions for the 6-string.

Post back and let me know if anyone gets more info on Billy's SG. Kind of surprised to see him with that - especially re: how light he strings his guitars - SGs are a bear to play and keep in tune because they're so thin to begin with- the whole thing is a "whammy bar" :-) I love SGs though - I've owned many through the years. You can make a LOT of noise with an SG. :-)

That was cool. I wish they would have mixed in more of the room sound but the tones are killer.

Same here. I have to say, I was really impressed with how great Billy sounded... and how low that badass slings his guitar. My personal rule: you must not be able to see my crotch below the guitar.

The pinstriping on the SG really made it pop. And I thought it looked to be a painted red rather than a stain. Have to watch again to see if I can get a better look.

Re: Billy Gibbons Plays a Sweet SG on Live From Daryl's House

Isn't this SG not really gibson but a copy similar to the gold top? Wasn't the recent custom shop reissue of that gold top a reissue of a non gibson? I could be wrong but don't think so.
