Middle Pup In Customs?

Hi All,
I'm new here, but you guys seem to have all the answers.
My question is: what pickup was used in the middle position on the '61 SG (LP Customs)? I have one but don't want to de-solder it just to check the resistance. Of course they are all PAF's , but I always wondered if it was the same as the neck, or bridge pup, or a whole different animal.
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not really familiar with the three pickup models but if my memory serves me correctly i remember reading in one of my gibson books that it is a neck pickup with a hotter output I'm not 100% sure though.

just an off topic question, can you post some picks?

Re: Middle Pup In Customs?

The 3 in my custom are all '57 classics, but its not a '61 .
also it is out of phase with the neck pick up.

Re: Middle Pup In Customs?

Is there a sound clip (or video clip) anywhere demonstrating a 3 pickup les paul custom or SG?

I wonder if having the pickups so close to each other affects their performance.

Re: Middle Pup In Customs?

Thanks Paul, everyone.
I suspected it was but could never bring myself to dissect it and put the meter on it. The way it's wired the Middle Pos. is Bridge + Middle.

Re: Middle Pup In Customs?

I have a 70s three pickup les paul and an old guitar mag review on it, a special humbucker was put into the middle position. I couldnt say exactly what without digging out the review, and yes that many pickups does have an effect on the strings. Cant say what they put on modern three pickup les pauls though. Just a mention to anyone who might be interested, I had the chance to try many years ago an old three pickup black beauty. It was wired in a strange manner you could have the neck pu on alone, you could have the middle pu on alone. In the centre selection you had the middle pickup on up to volume 8 then above that up to 10 you had the middle and bridge out of phase with each other!! you could not have the bridge pickup on its own. This guitar was totally origonal when I checked the serial number it turned out to be a 1966 one. Yes I know that les paul production stopped between 60 and 68 however you could custom order from kalamazoo a discontinued model and they would build it for you. My point is I wonder how many more are out there.

Interesting. Mine seems to be:
mostly middle pup + some bridge -Middle pos.
mostly bridge pup + some middle -Bridge pos.
Wiring looks virgin.
