Gibson Explorer Custom?

I don't know if Gibson has ever made anything similar to a Gibson Explorer custom, like they do with the Les Paul Custom. I could be wrong, but man I would buy an explorer with custom style binding with an ebony fretboard with block inlays in a heartbeat! I'm not talking about those explorer pros they made with that, I'm talking full-sized explorer goodness.

I know some of the E2's had a custom look and feel to them, but I'm talking full on Explorer Custom. Anyone with me?

I know they recently made something like this for Lzzy Hale from Halestorm, but come on Gibson! Make it for the rest of us, just don't put so much gold on it and offer some other colors!

Crap... I'd buy her model if they offered it and change out the excessive gold!

Re: Gibson Explorer Custom?

That's Lizzy Hale of Halestorm.

Quote:
There are female fronted band and then there are female musician fronted bands. Halestorm is the latter. Lzzy <Elizabeth> Hale is vocalist and songwriter for the rock band Halestorm, which also features her brother, Arejay, on drums, Joe Hottinger on guitar and Josh Smith on bass. The cool thing is she is a really good guitarist in her own right. Hale plays a Gibson Explorer, Les Paul Custom, Tribal Flying V, Firebird, and Joan Jett Signature Melody Maker, which was a gift from her band. In may 2012 Gibson Guitars created a signature series guitar for Lzzy.

Yeah, a Explorer Custom in Wine-red or a Black Beauty.
I'd still want all the gold hardware though. But that's just me.

Re: Gibson Explorer Custom?

If they could do it with the 58-style Vs, why wouldn't they do it with the Explorers? I know it sure would be awesome if they did.

Yeah I would love a black beauty styled one, but with a 5-ply Black/White pickguard!

I just don't like the gold pickguard and pickup rings on hers. Just seems like overkill. I'm fine with the gold hardware.

Yeah that makes no sense to me as well. They can make a custom styled V, but no Explorer?

Re: Gibson Explorer Custom?

Look for an Xplorer Pro - made in 2002-2004. I had one - neck is just like a Les Paul Custom (ebony with block inlays) - available in trans black and trans amber typically. Here's a pic of one -

Thanks for the suggestion, but I used to own one of the sunburst explorer pros they put out in 2007. It didn't have the ebony and blocks, but I couldn't stand the smaller body. So it got sold.

I want Gibson to make a full-size explorer custom!

Re: Gibson Explorer Custom?

These were kinda interesting, just a lot of gold going on. Even has gold fret wire. Not sure how you deal with that when it starts pitting.

Anyone have any experience with one of these?

I love the looks of these and the Traditional Pros etc. But, Gibson keeps getting that crazy idea that anybody would want smaller V and Explorer bodies. I don't know who is smoking what over there, but give me a full sized version of both and they would be on my wall right now, but the miniature versions are just.....well, mini. lol

I put blocks in my fretboard when I built mine. I think they look good, and I think that Custom is awesome.

The only things that kill the Lizzy Hale model for me are the pickguard and pickup rings. I'd be tempted to change them to black

I agree 100%.

I doubt they will manufacture her model for the masses though.

The fretwire won't be made of the metal gold. It will just be gold in colour. Gold is soft and obviously very expensive. It would be useless as a fretwire. So you deal with it the same way as you deal with any other frets.

Do you actually own one of these? If so, I'd be curious of your opinion of this model.

No, I don't own one. I was just letting you know that no one would fret it with real gold. The guitar itself appears to be just a slightly curvier explorer with a flametop. Possibly one of the guitar-of-the-week models, so reasonably rare/hard to find, but not massively collectable. I would imagine it plays the same as any other explorer, but is 'blingier'.

I know it's not real gold, but the gold plating Gibson uses on the bridge and other gold hardware tends to pit over time. That's why I asked if anyone had one. I was looking for first hand experience. Thanks anyways.

Yeah this was one of the guitars of the month in October 2008, the 50th anni Explorer, just 1,000 made, in brimstone burst, very lovely imo .....

Re: Gibson Explorer Custom?

After years of lurking, I actually registered in order to post on this thread

Here's my '79 Explorer. Ebony fretboard with Custom blocks and neck binding. No body binding, unfortunately, but it's halfway to what you want. It also appears to have a one-piece body... no seams I can find.

The previous owner wrote to Gibson to get the story of the guitar...

Gibson replied that they didn't have production details on it but that the serial was correct for '79. Which means it's either

0) An elaborate fake from somebody who heard replica Explorers could bring big cash and accidentally did a '79 instead of a '58

1) A replacement fretboard installed absolutely flawlessly

2) A '79 Explorer that happened to get built with blocks and binding.

We'll never know!

Thanks for posting that JackBaruth! Sweet looking explorer you've got there. Interesting story. Would love to see some more pictures, especially of that fretboard up close. Who knows maybe someone here can tell you if it's been replaced or if it's a fake.
