P90 cover change on Melody Maker
Small changes = big difference in tone
When I planned the mods on my 59 MM, one of the things I planned was to install a P90 in the neck position with an actual metallic cover. I ordered a WCR P90 and tried to find a metallic cover for it. I never found one in time and instead ordered a chrome-covered plastic cover. I have Fillmore WCR pickups in another guitar and installed a WCR Crossroads in the bridge position of the MM. I'm very satisfied with both. The P90 however was almost unusable: too "woofy", lack of definition... A few months ago, I found a store in Germany which sells metallic covers for P90s. I ordered one recently, installed it and... bingo! Not only is the P90 usable now, it actually sounds pretty good too...
