Have interesting questions and want an SG
for starters I am a lefty so I have a limited choice for a bargain deal. I have never played a Gibson SG but played a few epis over the years in stores. 2 things, I love the look of the 61' reissue but think the neck will be too thin (deep wise) and wide. I felt the neck on an SG standard and it felt better. Kind of a thinned out C shape. Can you get a 61' reissue body with a thicker more rounded neck?
I would also take anything beat up because I will be putting all new gear in it and have a wild idea of repainting the whole thing in a 60's psychedelic mural. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks! Here are a few ideas of the paint to get you all in the ballpark...... [IMG] [/IMG]![]()

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
Thanks! If it weren't for those P90s then I would be game. I think I want just some classic PAFs like all my other LPs. I know I should switch it up but it is so hard to sometimes. I want to be able to use it as a slide guitar too. 59 Duncans would be nice. I have all Sheptones in my LPs but would like to give SD a shot. I wonder if the custom shop would make one for cheaper if I requested no finish........

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
hmmmm.... I wonder if it would be nice to have some P90s in the arsenal??? As far as that guitar model is concerned what makes it so cheap? The price scares me a bit. I can get an SG Standard at the same price used. Sorry guys I know nothing about the SGs only about LPs. I am learning tough

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
Can you get a decently smooth sound out of P90s as well? His tone sounds great but I would like to smooth it up for some Sonny Landreth and Derek Trucks stuff too

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
I called Musicians Friends and they don't carry a lefty version. They said I would probably have to go through the custom shop which would be very expensive......

Here's the thing man.
Gibson SG's are awesome. Regardless.

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
Well I just got back from a few local stores. No luck with Lefties other than an Epi SG 200 (kind of looks a 62' reissue). It played great actually. Sounded better than I expected and I played through a couple of Orange amps that sounded killer. Maybe I should just go with the standard.
Last question then..... Is there anyway to make a parts SG? Buy a body and neck separately and piece it together myself? I have seen tons of Tele and Strat kits but not Gibbys |

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
It depends how handy you are and if you have any experience building/assembling a guitar kit. I found a SG guitar kit from Bulldog DC-S Guitar Kit, but in all likelihood you will have to do a lot of work to it. It´s right-handed...I guess you could plug the control holes and route them on the other side, but that would remove a lot of wood and make it very neck heavy. Maybe you could get in touch with them and see if they can work with you.
If I were you, I might just take the Epi and mod it to my heart´s content. |

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
SGs are fantastic and p90s are right at home in one. Very versatile.
Give one of those Classics some play time if you can. I doubt you will regret it.

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
Gibson SGs are just fine. Good shops should be able to get you the lefty SG you want...

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
Keep your eyes peeled on the various lefty forums and eBay for a left handed Faded SG. Some of them go for $500 or $600 and they are stellar guitars for their price point. The pickups are too hot for my playing style, but YMMV.

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
Thats what I keep doing. I have found some good standards on craigslist for cheap too but I am still hung up on the whole neck thing. I might just have to pull the trigger anyway
Gibson SGs are just fine. Good shops should be able to get you the lefty SG you want...
Very cools pics! Nice lefty's too! I thought a good shop could do it too. But they keep saying everything has to go through the custom shop now and there is no way I am paying $2,200 for an SG just to have a 50s neck. For that price I would get myself a well used Goldtop or pay a little extra for an R8 plain top. That does bring up a good point..... I think I will call around some of the bigger stores in places like Austin, Texas, Chicago, Wildwood in Colorado etc. BTW I had an awesome gig last night in the Four Seasons downtown Chicago. That is one fancy joint. Atleast the bus boys were sneaking me glasses full of Jack Daniels all night! |

Plenty of lefty SGs out there. You just have to look for them.

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
That is a sweet spread Dino! I just found out the 70s tribute models have rounded necks. Wildwood guitars has one for $800. What do you guys think about that model?

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
You should look at the Fadeds. They have nice, round necks, not too deep but with beefy shoulders. The 490s are good general-purpose pickups.

SG Special '70s Tribute Left-Handed | SG Tributes | Gibson Guitars | Electrics | Wildwood Guitars
That's the link to it. Looks beautiful Sony wouldnt want to refinish it but I know nothing about mini humbuckers. Could be something different to have in the arsenal...... |

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
Thanks Thump. Sounds cool. Would be nice to get a scooped, snappy sound without using a strat. I might snag this one. Wildwood has a good rep of only selling good guitars. I wonder if this one is a winner? I will give them a ring

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
I keep on pushing this idea because it works.
P90 in the neck and humbucker in the bridge on an SG Special. Versatile as hell. ![]() You could do it with a faded as well to cut costs and put in a P90 that is h/b sized to avoid routing. |

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
I like that idea a lot! I am kind of sold on the minimum buckets now though. I think they will be sweet sounding and perfect for slide as well. Now the only question is black or vintage sunburst?!

Re: Have interesting questions and want an SG
NGD!!! I just got the 70' s special SG. I will take my chances with it and because the finish is not super special, I can always strip it and make me one psychedelic monster! Thanks for all of the help. I will have a full neck report come Friday
