compressed sanded smooth wood substitute

I was at GC today and played a gold top epi casino...

when I play a simi or full hollowbody I always stick my finger through the F hole (lol, this sounds a lot more exciting then it really is but that is what the same anymore...

anyway, the top was not as thin as say an ibanez but it felt so weird. like it was made from some strange wood substitute (sometimes the whole wood substitute is necessary when you age, sad but ture)... anyway, I asked the clerk to touch the top too, he noticed the same thing... I am still wondering if the wood is somehow wrong...

I'm pretty sure that Epiphone uses laminate woods on their regular production hollows and semi-hollows, so it's layers of thin wood and glue. So yeah, I guess that is a compressed, sanded smooth, wood substitute.

They most certainly use laminate and even some higher priced simi or full hollowbody guitar use laminate also but it felt weird almost like plaster of paris that had been fully sanded....

It's a peanut butter wafer pressed laminate. the peanut butter just dried up, that's all!

Re: compressed sanded smooth wood substitute

Epi hollow-bodys are definitely made from laminated wood (plywood), but it is wood.

that is my fear that epi casino are going to be made with richlite... I do not remember about the edge of the hole being finished or not... I do remember looking at it and trying to figure out what the hell it was... looking at the inside back piece looked like real wood... because it is a GC special and the gold top does look really nice, I wonder if epi cut some other corners...

I always want a casino but I remember the other one I have played in the past sounding a LOT better... what that means I do not know. Maybe my ear has grown more or, maybe my allergies are effecting me more then I realize or, maybe my memory is more limited then I like to admit (this happens often enough)...
