NGD - bit underwhelmed!

Well, after a long wait in the UK, my Gibson Custom Shop SG Standard Reissue with Maestro arrived today.

The guitar plays great but the final finish is pretty sloppy, the issues are:

1. Dimple in Maestro - looks like a screw or something is sticking into the Maestro plate cover (the bit with the logo on it) from underneath and has caused it to dimple out.

2. Further scratching on the edge of the Maestro.

3. Dent in the bottom of the body.

4. Pick guard looks like someone has tried to chamfer it with a stanley knife in places and have made a pretty poor job of it.

Pics below.

that dent on the bottom is unacceptable if that is a new guitar.

otherwise everything else would not bother me

Re: NGD - bit underwhelmed!

normally I would say just play it and be done with it, but if you shelled out money for a custom order, return it. These are the types of things that will diminish your enjoyment, if you return it, you'll probably feel better.

Same as I always say when somebody highlights these sorts of faults with a new guitar - send it back. The fewer people who complain about unsatisfactory quality then the more they'll (manufacturers) think they can get away with it.

Agreed....a 700 dollar guitar I would say screw it but custom shop stuff isn't cheap...and for the money it should be almost flawless.

Re: NGD - bit underwhelmed!

The nice guys at the Custom Shop, decided they like you, so they reliced your guitar free of charge...you should be happy, usually you have to pay the big bucks for such treatment.

I would send it back in a heartbeat, not acceptable.

Re: NGD - bit underwhelmed!

When I bought my SG from GC it had a small dent in the back of the neck that some hacker probably put in it after being molested in the store. I fixed it with some nitro and it's fine and now I look at the spot as a battle scar. But your situation is different; I would send it back.

Re: NGD - bit underwhelmed!

Those dents shouldn't be there. The body dent especially. I wonder if the shop did it while they were checking it out. But the dent in the trem has to be from the factory.

The body and vibrato dents aren't acceptable in a new guitar, to me. The pickguard wouldn't bug me.

Re: NGD - bit underwhelmed!

After a long wait, and with the fact it's a brand new guitar from the custom shop that you've ordered from a dealer, in my mind not a single one of the issues is remotely acceptable.

I wouldn't think twice about sending it back to the dealer and complaining.

Re: NGD - bit underwhelmed!

I got rid of a 335 a week ago and for the money spent I was very dissappointed. The fretboard had jig marks on a few frets and a small section on the fretboard was rough because when they planed it , it wasnt quite thick enough in that 1 spot. Its the only Gibson I bought that had any real issues.

Re: NGD - bit underwhelmed!

I agree send it back. It's a shame the Gibson Custom Shop is letting stuff out the door like that. Even if the dents happened after the guitar left Gibson which i doubt the pick guard got hacked there.

Pack it up & send it back. Absolutely NO excuse for workmanship like that for the price you had to pay for a Custom Shop Gibson.

We all deserve better than what they're flaking out these days. Make a statement man.

Well, the dents would kill it for me, in a new guitar.

To be honest, I probably wouldn't have even noticed the pickguard.

There is only one thing that would make me keep that guitar. And that is if I plugged it into the amp and it sounded like this...
