Question about a firebird neck
Hi there,
I´m actually planning the build of a neck-through-constructed reverse firebird. The neck of these guitars was joined together with nine stripes of mahogany and walnut. Does anyone here know the exact width of the four narrow walnut stripes and the five mahogany stripes shown in the picture below? Thank you very much in advance. Greetings from Germany Bastelmann |

Re: Question about a firebird neck
I no longer have my vintage guitar collection but at one point I had a dozen vintage 63/64 FB's. I'm sure someone here will be able to give you measurements for the current build but if you would like any detailed photos of the vintage builds I have plenty of pics of all areas and cavities. It would also be cool to build a reproduction of the "original" Firebird neck heel which Gibson changed after the first several weeks of production in 1963. None of the Custom Shop reissues or any Firebirds produced from early 1963 until today have used that heel design. I always thought it wpuld be cool if they would have reproduced the actual original 1963 design. There is also a difference in body dimensions between the early 1963 Firebirds and all that have followed.
Here is a pic of a virgin 1964 Firebird I control cavity showing the silver sheilding paint that Gibson used as a standard feature on all 1963 and 1964 reverse Firebirds.. If you are building this strictly as a utility player I apologize for geeking out amd posting this. I'm a career player and my personal guitars are viewed as very utilitarian but I still enjoy the other side and love to look at Gibsons from the historical perspective and the finer naunces that make the "vintage" examples what they are.

Re: Question about a firebird neck
This is laminates on a '63 year model to look at while you wait. I would not be surprised at all if the lams are slightly different today... not that it would make a bit of difference as an instrument. It just seems that the majority of build tolerances have varied over the decades.
