SG strap lock?

I was wondering what strap locks you guys use on your SG's my schallers seem to be quite long for the one at the neck joint.

Re: SG strap lock?

I was wondering the same thing myself. Seems like it would stick out too far.

Re: SG strap lock?

DiMarzio cliploks work nicely.

on my old beater i've used Schallers, Dunlops, metal washers, Grolsh washers, duct tape....the list goes on.

I've heard those old school leather Bandstand ones work well on SG's, V's, Explorers and the like.

Schallers, and I haven't noticed any issues with the strap lock poking me or anything.

Re: SG strap lock?

Thats why I like the 61 reissue SG and the G400s. The strap button is on the body just behind the neck heal.

Re: SG strap lock?

I use a Grolsch washer at the neck (for the reason you mentioned) and a Dunlop straplock at the bottom.

Re: SG strap lock?

I use Schaller Strap locks exclusively now..

back when i did have dunlops on an SG the darn thing was always pokin me in the gut...

Schallers do it to, but to a lesser extent.. My sulotion is that on an SG or a V where the button does hit me (some do some dont, depends on design) I use a plastic washer agaisnt the guitar a ferrule around the screw and a fender washer on the outside then screw it down. i uthen se a schaller on butt end straplock and remove the strap there.

Re: SG strap lock?

LOXX work really well on SG's, as they are lower profile than others and the screw won't go through the guitar.

There's a nice shot of the difference in size.

You can also check out www.loxxusa.com/product-comparison for more LOXX/Schaller side-by-sides.

Re: SG strap lock?

I use these:
http://www.amazon.com/Dunlop-7006J-Ergo-Lock-Piece/dp/B0002OOMUS http://www.amazon.com/Dunlop-7006J-Ergo-Lock-Piece/dp/B0002OOMUS

I've had them for about six months and no issues. I like them because you don't have to remove screws or anything.

I have the Grolsch Washers on mine.

It's mainly because I'm too lazy to change the strap buttons

Re: SG strap lock?

I was debating this for my new SG too, the screws that came with my Dunlop straplocks would have screwed right into/through my fretboard.

Rather than going to a hardware store to find a different screw I ended up getting one of these straps:
https://www.lockitstraps.com/

Came in yesterday and it works well, if you get one for an SG make sure you get the 'reversed' option

Re: SG strap lock?

I just went through this process for my SG Classic

I wanted something secure, quiet, that wouldn't stick out to far (because of force on the screw, not fear of hitting my belly), and that I could use the existing screws in for easy install/de-install in the event I ever sell the guitar and want to put the OEM buttons back on. I thought the Planet Waves elliptical buttons would be the best bet over strap locks, but neither my local store or nearby SA or GC had them. GC salesman pushed the LOXX pretty hard, but I dunno, that's just such a small nub that it holds onto. And once that mechanism wears and loosens up (which it of course will over time), you're SOL. I don't really trust a rubber Grolsch washer to hold the strap on the neck side... it's a lot of outward pull on there.

Enter Star Picks. Unfortunately, they only had 12-packs, but whatever. $4

You have to remove the strap button. With some moderate pressure, the pick will snap right over the small side of the button but it won't pull over the larger end, even if you try your darndest to make it. Then put your strap on the inside of the button, and screw the button back in. I left the other button pick-free for now, it seems pretty safe, and lets me roll the strap to put it in the case or release it to straighten it out.

I used an .88, it worked well and had just enough flex to "snap" onto the button. The next thickness up might also have worked

Never heard of these before, they look interesting. What's the locking mechanism like?

I've posted this before in this forum, but check out this thread to see the pull out/shear tests of LOXX. There is absolutely no way companies like Rolls Royce, Benteley, and others would even consider these if they are likely to wear out and fail after some regular use. Some info is in this thread: Still in love with Loxx!

Re: SG strap lock?

I found these very cheap plastic slip-on strap locks on ebay. They are very cheap, no mod needed, and THEY WORK GREAT...I hae them on all my guitars with straps now, including my '99 SG Special...

Check the thumbnail...

Re: SG strap lock?

I use these on my SG and pretty much all my geets.

Cost me less than $8, work well and are a breeze to fit.

Cheers

Re: SG strap lock?

I only ever tried strap locks once and they were Dunlops. The screw was so long, it poked up through the fretboard of my 90s Epi G-310, so I backed it out. Nowadays, being an old fart, I just use these:

Re: SG strap lock?

I use these leather ones. They are a bit hard to find these days. They used to be on a cardboard holder in just about every music store in the 70's and 80's. Or I use Grolsch gaskets.
