Help! Possible ngd need advice
I am exclusively a Les Paul Player. I have a few strats but don't know how to play them (set them in tonally in a larger rig). I am soooooo into Derek Trucks and was looking at SGs. I do about 90% lead guitar work so having access to higher frets is a big advantage and would be nice to have in my arsenal. I know SGs are not super expensive compared to LPs and I was thinking about getting a custom shop one until I saw this..... eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices
What do you guys think? Honest opinions please. I would offer $1,700 and see how it goes. No comments on the color hahaha. I actually dig it big time. I am looking for specifics about this year, playability, pups, neck profile, etc. Do you think it would be worth it if I got it for $1,800 to $2,000? Or would it make more sense to get a brand new custom shop SG? THANKS!!

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
I can't really comment on the price, but if I were a lefty, I'd be all over that one!

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
As far as getting you into Derek territory, nah, you could get closer, but it's a sweet guitar. I'd hit it right handed!
I'd get a used 61 reissue with 57's for Derek. Basically what he's using anyway. I really do like this one though. |

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
Hahaha I use them at home and will teach myself soon to set them up in a bigger rig. I need to mark all of my settings for each guitar on my amp. Anyways, what's the tonal difference between a 61' reissue and this one. I always put new pups in everything so if that is the issue it's a non-issue. I bet these originals sound pretty good though

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
the 61 RI has a neck joint at the 22 fret and the 76 looks like a 19 fret neck joint. They both have pretty good reachability (my word for a guitar neck that you can move up and down the neck) so I can't say that they're bad. The only minor concern is if you're not a big fan of smaller necks SOME of those 70s SGs had Tele like neck sizes. But don't let that scare you off

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
$18-2000? Definitely worth it if you can get them down to that price.

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
I have to say I'm not liking the looks of that bridge. Wasn't '76 the iffy Norlin era with Gibson? That bridge looks like a fairly poor design, especially if it's screwed onto the top of the guitar like it looks like. I know that Norlin guitars can be great and are said to often be skippable meaning that one has to try them before one commits, which is also making me hesitant about this guitar.
I should mention I'm not expert on Gibson history or SG's (although I did own one). I'm just thinking, since you are looking for a guitar to play live, why would you be looking at a vintage guitar from an uncertain era as opposed to a new one? I think the '61 reissue he used might make more sense: Derek Trucks Guitar Gear Rig and Equipment Just my two cents. |

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
Thanks for the input Larry. The seller does say its a nice playing guitar and the neck "isn't a full on baseball bat neck like the 58's (LPs) but definitely on the larger 50s profile side." This is a big plus for me. I want as SG with a 50s neck. I know Derek plays a slimmer 60s profile, neck but 50s would be perfect for me. I just asked the seller about intonation, harmonics, etc so I will have to see what he says. As far as why do I want to gig with an old guitar...All of my old guitars keep on taking a beating and lasting. I have had lots of little things going wrong on my newer Gibsons. I always have to replace switches, pups, harnesses, etc because the stock ones suck. You bring up a great point about the bridge though. I will look into that for sure!

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
Isn't the bridge know as a harmonica style? They were apparently big in the 70s.

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
Yes, it's a typical 70s harmonica bridge. Nothing wrong with it at all.

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
I didn't notice but look at all of his additional switches and knob. Wonder what they all did? Maybe a phase and preamp boost.....??? Very cool

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
You might not want to replace those pups, those are tar backs and they are pretty killer sounding...give em a shot before you pull em

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
It looks wrong to me.One of the points is higher than the other. Looks like the neck joint is splitting away too. 5 screws on the control cavity. I don't think that right. And also, as a standard, shouldn't the inlays be trapizoid?

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
Yeah I noticed the chips on the neck joint but didn't know what to make of it. About the inlays, the Norlan's were pretty inconsistent and they used different parts and materials in their guitars. I am not worried about that too much. The neck joint is worrisome. FYI everyone, I offered $1500 and got a no thank you. I have since offered $2,000 shipped and they said 'I would love to help you but we just don't have that kind of wiggle room in our guitars." Sounds like he is trying pretty hard. I think $2K is a fair price for both of us. I will offer it up again on the last day. I just don't think he is going to sell it at his price. I would buy a much newer one with a 50s neck if I could ever find one in a lefty!

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
One day you will find yourself not playing like Derek Trucks.
Then you'll begin to wonder if it is due to the lack of an abr-1 bridge and most importantly, the lyre tailpiece aka the mojo ![]() A few months ago I came across with a 03 SG '61 reissue with an abr-1 bridge and it sounded magnificent. But it had a neck repair so I didn't pull the trigger. Now I really miss its gorgeous tone and damn, a dream to look like Derek Trucks (LOL)For me, I would prefer a '62 VOS but if the '76 sounds good to you, I'd say grab it

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
Thanks for that Zappa post!!! Very helpful and cool. That is a lot of on board flexibility. He is a mad scientist of tone!
That video of the yellow SG is pretty nice. I might have to pull the trigger on it. I hope I can get it for $2,000 |

Re: Help! Possible ngd need advice
That SG was built for Zappa by some guy in Arizona, it had phase switches, coil split and a few other odd things. I'm surprise Gibson hasn't hopped onboard with making a Zappa SG sig
