Gibson SG Necks
I'm going to New York in a few weeks, hoping to stop by a few guitar shops..
I'm looking for an SG with a thinner neck profile, but at the lowest cost without going for the specials/fadeds. I know necks are all done by hand, so they will be a little different every time. As most SG Standards have a thicker profile neck (now, at least), is there any particular year that tends to have a thinner neck? And what is the deal on Norlin era SG standards? They obviously look a little different but is there anything major, like the neck profiles? Guitar Center has the new Coil tapped Sg's with thin necks, one model in a nice dark cherry, but it's at retail price. So I was hoping to find one for a little less, and perhaps without coil taps (not particularly interested). Last edited by Imuny; 04-08-2012 at 10:28 PM. |

Re: Gibson SG Necks
check out Sam Ash, they have cool, limited edition Standards going for about $1100.00-1200.00--there's a pelham blue and a gold top that looks sweet!!!

Re: Gibson SG Necks
Those Standards are of the few "regular" SG's that are currently produced with thin necks. Which to me is completely asinine since th SG is a 60's icon, not one from the 50's.

Re: Gibson SG Necks
If you want a thin neck get a 61 reissue. IF they are really based on a 61 they should have a very thin neck as the real original 61's were very thin.

Re: Gibson SG Necks
The Sam Ash pelham blue standards have big necks.
If you want a thinner neck, but not the faded. Then the 61RI is the next up and it's stickered at $2k. However, Guitar Center has a limited edition run that's an SG standard with open coil pickups and a 60's slim taper neck. Look for one of those. They are stickered around $1200. |

The NYC shops have massive amounts of overhead to keep their stores running, especially near times square. Much harder to get a good deal. Also, every guitar is manhandled due to the heavy flow of tourists causally passing by. |
