Help me find my next SG?!
Hi Guys,
Over the years one thing I have come to realize, I am a Gibson guy. I have owned PRS, Fender, Hamer, Dean, and some others.....but always come back to a Gibson. Right now I have a 2004 LP Standard and 1994 LP Standard. I also have a 1989 SG Special. I love them all but after trying to decide between a strat, or PRS, maybe an ES-333.....I really want another SG. However, it has to play and sound great like my other Gibsons. Are there some years that are better than others? The '61 reissue is nice but I prefer a beefy neck. Maybe an SG Standard since I like a 50s style neck and fretboard binding. Fat neck and binding! ![]() Should I just go and play a bunch of new ones? I would rather save and buy used so maybe I will see if any if the Guitar Centers have used ones in store and maybe local Craigslist. What about neck heavy? My 1989 is a Special with humbuckers and Kluson tuners. It is not neck heavy and very balanced. I will even consider SG Historic models. Since my 1989 SG is stock, it has a Gibson HB-L bridge pickup is 14K. I would like this SG to have more of a classic set of pickups, maybe alnico II magnets? The Angus SG looks sweet but isn't the neck thin? How about SG's with coil splitting? What the heck is an SG Standard Limited. They don't seem any different! Thanks guys! -Rich Here she is with her friend. |

Re: Help me find my next SG?!
Neck heavy-In my experience, Epiphones are more prone to this-they have a longer headstock and many have Grovers, which are HEAVY tuners. My Gibson SG Special balances very well. My Epi G400 Custom did not.
I'd suggest looking and playing various SG's to see what you prefer. Check some of teh older imports, too - Samick and various Japanese makes. Some of them are first rate and a lot less money than real Gibsons. I have no problems buying used guitars, if you know what you actually are buying. Enjoy the hunt. mark

Re: Help me find my next SG?!
I love my 2001 SG Special, personally. Great fat neck, nice woods and a trusty Bigsby B7. Okay, that last bit might not be original ...
I think there are sone similarly fat necked P90 SGs out now ... could be interesting ... Or what about a Custom 3-pickup? Just some ideas. Okay, so maybe it's what I'd be thinking of if I had the cash for another SG!

If I were you I would jump on one of these. I think they have to be one of the best deals gibson has right now. And it comes with HSC

Re: Help me find my next SG?!
Standards are IMHO a much nicer feel than the specials..
I own plenty of both and the standards just feel more luxurious to me for lack of a better term...play everything and go with what feels and sounds good to you. |

Re: Help me find my next SG?!
The standard Limited is just a regular Standard but they have a few non-standard finishes (Natural Burst, Vintage Burst, Aged Cherry and cream). Also they have Baked Maple boards instead of what ever the other standards are using these days, rosewood i believe, but im not sure.
I believe they're exclusive to Guitar Center and 1 other retailer. I just bought one in vintage burst a few weeks ago from GC and got it for just about a grand out the door. I love it and would highly recommend it. |

Re: Help me find my next SG?!
Have you ever considered a SG Supreme? 24 frets I think and beautiful guitar, I used to love SG's when I was about 15 not so much anymore but that Supreme still does it for me. The neck comes down more into the guitar then a regular SG I guess it is 24 frets, don't hold me to it though.

Re: Help me find my next SG?!
I dunno what you should buy next, although I would recommend an SG with P90s, but...if you ever decide to lose that Special, shoot me a PM!

I think this is the regular variation of each individual guitar, within the "50's neck " or the SG rounded or whatever the specs say they are. |

Re: Help me find my next SG?!
I have been playing 40+ years and have owned tons of guitars, mostly Gibsons. For some reason (and I don't have a clue why) 1997 was a very good year for SG's. The bodies seemed a touch lighter, and the guitars had more of a vintage feel. I have owned 97 Specials, standards and my current favorite...and SG-1 which is an incredibly versatile guitar which is strange considering it only has one pickup. But it does have the coil split and 24 frets. Love that guitar, everyone who plays it wants to buy it.
