Nut query on my Melody maker

Hi all

About a month ago my local store deepened the grooves in the nut of my melody maker, prior to this the string height at the 1st fret was very high, my guitar tutor picked up on this. For the last month it's played great, the action was I'd first expected, no fret buzz on any fret.

I played it last night it was awful!!! I'm encountering fret buzz playing open strings on the low E and A strings, the strings on the first frets are more or less touching. I'm at a total loss as to what this could be. The guitar is not played everyday, perhaps 3 times a week, as I swap around with my others.

Could someone throw some light on this?

Nige

Hard to tell without having it in hand or at least pictures, but I would check the relief to see if you need a truss rod adjustment. The season is changing, and it sounds like you've developed a back-bow.
Pinkie and reedy like this.

This was my first thought too, Would a little relief on the neck perhaps cure this? The neck is dead straight at present.

While I'm flying blind here, the first thing I'd do is loosen the truss rod to induce a bit of relief. Dead flat doesn't work for me, but I do it by eye with no measuring tools. So I can't really tell you how much is just enough in my experience, but when my boards are dead flat, they buzz.

Just yesterday I made my Martin acoustic "perfect" with a half turn in the loose direction.
