I think the SG might be the best all around guitar ever built...comments welcome
I have to say, I simply love the Gibson SG. I used to swear by les Paul's before but that was before I started touring heavily and not just bringing it out once in a while...the SG truly is the tone of an LP in a smaller, tighter package with a far lighter body. That's not to mention the upper access to the frets without that damn huge heal neck joint found on lp's.
I'm in no way saying the les Paul is an inferior instrument sound wise....I just think that the SG was a brilliant design..even more so than the strat or tele. Buy and play what you like..lm just saying that these guitars, even the fadeds are worth every penny. Unlike other Gibson offerings.

I never liked SG's till I bought one, eventually had 3 of them...Back to one now, a Samick Artist Series copy of a Les Paul SG...One of my favorite guitars of all time.
(I also have 3 LP's and 2 Epi Dots...and a few Peaveys... )mark

I always liked them... just never cared to play them... Body is too thin for my liking,
But Iconic guitar,, yes indeed

I could never get on with mine.Just felt too flimsy and the neck really did flex like a rubber band. The white 3 pickup customs look the business though.

My Epi with P-90s simply screams. And I thought the same thing, it's like a Les Paul, but more comfortable. That was,...until I picked up my Lester again... An SG is a great guitar, but I feel like a LP feels more like a beautiful woman in your hands, I just like them more.

The SG has never done anything bad to me personally, but I really can't stand them or the way they look.
The only one I ever thought I'd like to own was the faded 'burst ExNihilo built.

Where are the SG lovers out there...can I be the only one that thinks these are not too thin, flimsy, unsexy toys compared to the Lester which to me anymore feels like strapping on an anchor for a show?

I am a newly converted SG lover. I have said a few different times on here that I think the SG is the perfect guitar. It is so light and sports the same beefy neck as my Les Paul Standard.

DONT WORRY
as long as ol' Ace1432 is around, no one else will be alone in loving the SG. ![]() I LOVE THEM. My 72 DLX, RAZOR THIN neck, i can straddle and throttle that neck all day. and im kindof a small guy, which is why i favor the SG guitars, but the neck on my 72 is IDEAL. my 79 is a little heavier being that it is walnut, but it has such a warm full TONE. my workhorse. my 2010 std-for some reason, i dont really play this guitar as often as the rest. i have designated it for my alternate tunings-open C, open G,Drop D, etc. My 2011 SG 24 ltd. i have to say that this guitar ties with my 79 for second place in my favorites. it has a 24 fret fingerboard, super deep carves for EASY access to every fret. and it is super light. it came with grover tuners which make it divebomb to the floor, but im going to be installing a B7 vibrato to try to counter that.

Me too, not a Gibson but a faded Epiphone Elitist. I love it...

They tend to be able to handle brighter tones well over the LP and they are lighter. Definitely undervalued as far as their counterparts are concerned and screamers in my book.

I disagree about SGs having a 'paul's tone, myself. Les Pauls have a refined tone, while the SG sounds blunt and in-your-face. A Les Paul is a bottle of Martell XO cognac. An SG is a bottle of Old Crow whiskey. |

Re: I think the SG might be the best all around guitar ever built...comments welcome
The SG, to me, is Gibson's Telecaster. It's a stripped down, straight forward, music making machine. I never really cared for them, a whole lot, when it came to the looks department, but lately I've been thinking that they're more my style than a Lester. I love LP's, but the SG just has some sort of badassery to it that no other guitar has.
I've been GASing for a Faded, but finding them left handed is pretty hard. I love the finish on the Fadeds. |

![]() Do want! ![]() Kinda what i've always felt. I remember I went into GC in 2007 and got to play one of the 2007 lp standards and a cherry red sg standard. I have to say that I did love both- they were similar but different. As of recently, i've been getting gas for other guitars, including other gibsons, and a non reverse firebird or sg with a vibrato would be really sweet! Not to mention sgs are alot cheaper than lps but sound kinda similar (and maybe have a preffered sound over the lp for some). |

I have a pretty good grip...even though SG's dont outsell strats they certainly retain their value better. In my opinion they are better crafted too. I just feel like because LP snubbed his nose at the design, the SG has always gotten a bad rap as being the drunk wedding crasher in the Gibson lineup. The SG chimes in a way that just sounds good to me, and the sustain is equal of that to my les pauls easy...they are different tones of course. I find for my needs though it just does all of it. |

Re: I think the SG might be the best all around guitar ever built...comments welcome
Being a Tele player mainly and hearing Tele players saying that an SG is a perfect foil to a Tele, I'd love to own one.
BUT.... I have yet to find one that isnt neck heavy. I cant stand that in a guitar. If someone can point me in a direction of an SG that didnt pull my left hand down, I'd seriously consider it. Because I love the SG vibe, and like the thinner bodied Gibsons

My first Gibson was a SG.I really liked Zappa and he was playing one.Never warmed up to it though. To me the ultimate Gibson is a 335 with the lester a close 2nd, but there is a hole in the Gibson family that the SG fills very well.

Re: I think the SG might be the best all around guitar ever built...comments welcome
I bought one in April last year, and it is my 4th guitar next to 3 other squires. It is a '02 standard in heritage cherry with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and a SD phat cat p-90 in the neck. But I haven't played enough other guitars to say it is the best ever, but the best I've played.

I love LP's, but the SG is definitely my favorite guitar. A Les Paul DC Jr or Special is my second favorite.

Re: I think the SG might be the best all around guitar ever built...comments welcome
I was asked this weekend my thoughts on LP DC's - in truth it's got the same neck heel that single cut LP's have. The access to the upper frets on an SG are like that of a metal guitar like an ibanez or jackson...but with a much classier rock package. And SG's look better with Bigbys and Maestros than any LP over seen hands down.

My SG has been my #1 for the better part of 20 years. I currently own two.
If you want ooomph and balls, an SG will deliver. If you love Angus and Iommi and Cream era Clapton and Pete Townshend, what else are you going to choose?

Depends on what you mean by "best allround guitar"...
I'd say the ES-339 or the CS-336 are hard to beat when it comes to allround-ability.... (And I do own one SG and have one 336 incoming....) Just my 2 cent's worth.....
