1970 Gibson SG
Hi, does anybody know what colour finish these two SG's are from 1970? Is it just faded walnut? The Gibson brochure of the period only mentions cherry or walnut as finish options but I have heard natural was available? Any info would be very gratefully received. Thanks.

Re: 1970 Gibson SG
I had a '74 SG, which originally was cherry, but over the years had completely faded to a walnut colour. You could still see the original cherry under the pickguard (don't have a picture of that, though) and on the inside edge of the control cavity.

Re: 1970 Gibson SG
It did actually piss me off, and I sold it last year after owning it for 20 years. Don't miss it one bit, to tell the truth.
Used the money towards buying my LP Custom. Now that baby is something else. |

Black pickups and rings?
Is that original? Never saw that. But I don't get out much.

Re: 1970 Gibson SG
Yeah, the pickups were original. Mini-humbuckers. If you do a Google image search you can see these guitars weren't exactly rare.
The bridge, nut and tuners were replacements, although I still had the original parts and sold them with the guitar. They were completely knackered, though. The bridge you could probably just have replaced the saddles, but the tuners were in very bad shape. It looked nice and all, but I never really liked it. Always felt awkward to me. The guy who bought it was in 7th heaven, though. Just goes to show - it either fits or it doesn't. I think the reason I never got to grips with it was because it had an almost ridiculously thin neck. Felt like a toothpick to me. |
