Re: Favorite Gibson NON-Les Paul
Cant make up my mind between an explorer or a V, you can sit down with an explorer but not a V. Standing up your right arm aches with an explorer but not with a V.

Re: Favorite Gibson NON-Les Paul
Well, not bulkier than a double neck, no. I meant bulkier than the SG standard. I don't know, I love the ES, but it's just so big, I couldn't get used to it.

Guess I'm too used to solid bodies! I'm 6'2", and it still seems big to me.
Love the sound of 'em tho.

Re: Favorite Gibson NON-Les Paul
Its somethin ya could get used to, if ya tried Again some of those tones ya just cant get out of other axes, thru good amps , Sometimes you can really get that Semi Hollow vibe coming out, and when the wood is vibing from neck to body back, Ah Magic

Re: Favorite Gibson NON-Les Paul
Well, that was one of the original "Rock Guitars", ala Chuck Berry.
But man...those are so expensive these days

Re: Favorite Gibson NON-Les Paul
Some folks are catchin on, These are and will follow the Burst Craze, I have rarely run across a Pre Norlin one that was dead or dull, still which I had my transistion or re neck, Could never get the straight skivvy on that one but I ddint try Gibson direct either Orange label but had a valute . Shop around , you can still find these at a good deal and Gibson is and does have a re issue 345 with a 60 style neck too, Veritone included

Re: Favorite Gibson NON-Les Paul
Guitar History Anchorman, in 61, Gibson discontinued the single cutaway LP Standard and Custom models for this ligher version that somewhat better fit most popular music of the time, The Truss rod covers bore a Les Paul signature in script, Les himself protested this model for a few reasons, 1, he didnt design it, 2 , he was going thru a divorce with Mary Ford , and wanted any and all royalty checks to halt, 3, he didnt like the horns so Gibson re named the guitar the SG, for Solid Guitar , 61 models are still referred to by Gibson and many others as 61SGLP's
Hey Lex, I think Switchmasters Pre Humbucker and after , are all cool axes too , Thats one big sweet Jazz and Blues Box ![]()

Re: Favorite Gibson NON-Les Paul
Switchmasters... here are mine. A 1959 blonde and a 1961 sunburst, with the florentine cutaway which was only done in '61. Both these guitars have x3 original PAF's.
The '61 has been customised with a later '60's L5 neck. Strangely the back is a bookmatched carved flame maple back, instead of the usual laminated back. Great guitars, but you need a pilots license to operate one... A grown up guitar! |

Re: Favorite Gibson NON-Les Paul
Pete started ReaL early, He had a 58 Flying V at one time, Sold it in 63, when a short run of Re Issues had come out , These are pretty rare, Left over 50's V's some with Nickel parts not gold . Pete dosnt BS and has some great guitar history He has produced for Emmylou Harris in the past as well , Last time I spoke to Pete , we talked about Danny who didnt live too far from me, He said" Half the times I came to your place I was either comin from, or goin to Danny's place "

Re: Favorite Gibson NON-Les Paul
I couldn't vote for just one. The '58 style V and Explorer are classics. I love both the SG and SG jr. And the 330/Casino are faves as well. Unfair question!

Re: Favorite Gibson NON-Les Paul
I used to use a Firebird V a lot, but never owned one. They sound astonishing, so have got to be my favourite non-Lester Gibson so far. 335 and 345 are also amazing, and I've really enjoyed playing them, but the Firebird really made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up with crunchy rhythm sounds.
However, got a new (to me) toy coming soon that might change my mind. Wanted a Firebird, but all the Zeppelin publicity turned my head... |

Re: Favorite Gibson NON-Les Paul
Like Birds, Explorers, SG's but there is No other guitar made by anyone, more versitile than an ES 345/ 355 Lucille type with a varitone knob, If you can imagine a natural guitar sound like Tele, Strat , PRS, Les Paul, SG, the ES 345/355 can do it pretty close if not nail it
