New SG Juniors
Yep, yet another post about SGs from me.
Gibson SG Junior '60s (Ebony) | Sweetwater.com Man, Gibson has been putting out some sweet guitars ever since this whole rosewood scandal. Trying to keep people on their side maybe? Dunno, don't care. Very cool guitar here in my opinion. Only difference are the tuners and the baked maple board. Neither of which I really care about. Ebony and heritage cherry, looks and sounds good to me Thoughts?

Re: New SG Juniors
Much agreed.
I've wanted an early guard Junior for a while. One of these would be killer. The wraparound is cool. I expected a compensated one or maybe even a TOM bridge, but they kept it as uncompensated wraparound. Good stuff. Might not be vintage accurate (except for the first year I believe) but still cool.

Re: New SG Juniors
Lots of folks up in arms about the baked maple board, but I'm surprisingly indifferent to it. Long as it plays good, I'm OK with it.
Only thing I'm not a fan of is the position of the knobs, but it's not a deal breaker. |

Re: New SG Juniors
I'm guessing they were trying to make it easier for people to adjust volume, since they moved that relatively closer to the bridge.

Re: New SG Juniors
Could be, or perhaps it was to more closely emulate a Les Paul Junior position, who knows. Doesn't really matter if it plays good. Visually I just prefer the original location, but this isn't bad either.

Re: New SG Juniors
I totally want one of these things. The only thing I would want to change would be adding a tortoise shell pickguard instead of the black.

Re: New SG Juniors
it just looks "off"
played one 2 days ago...light as hell and its a screamer but the horns and knobs are both off and look like hot mess. not so bad on the black but sticks out like a sore thumb on the cherry |

They're slogan should be "We get you 7/8ths of the way there." This is also the first time i've seen a SG version of anything cost more than the LP version.

Re: New SG Juniors
They had one in Sam Ash yesterday, I don't think that baked maple is gonna work for me, it just doesn't look or feel right. It has kind of a reddish muddy light to medium brown color and the grain feels way to tight/smooth. I was optimistic until I actually saw one in person.

Re: New SG Juniors
I saw a pic today of a 50's Trib with humbuckers that has a baked maple board and it was really dark. Looked pretty similar in color to rosewood.

Re: New SG Juniors
Here is the stock MF picture of the new SG Junior with baked maple.
![]() Here is a picture of a brand new 50's HB Tribute with baked maple. The color difference is huge and this picture looks good to me.

Re: New SG Juniors
I agree on the picture. All I'm suggesting, is that you try and see one in person first. It made a difference for me to see the actual guitar and not just compare pictures. Based on the pictures, I was pretty optimistic they would be fine. After seeing the actual guitar, I changed my mind.

Re: New SG Juniors
i think they look pretty cool. how different is the horn bevels from a vintage sg jr?
i'll still try one out, and if i like it i'll buy. always wanted a sg jr with the old school pick gaurd. gonna throw a tremelo just like one of these on it.

Re: New SG Juniors
Guitar Gallery | Sweetwater.com
found lots of better pictures here. the bevels are "off" from a 60s original but i still think it's a great deal on a great looking p90 machine!

Re: New SG Juniors
Knobs are off as well. Those pics look good. I'm not against one, I too would love a small guard junior. I would certainly be receptive to checking out others to see if another one was a better one for me.

Re: New SG Juniors
I just cant get my head around why the always divert from the original designon every "reissue they make"
why not make them like the old ones? look at fender, you can get a strat or a tele, jag, jm etc pretty much just like the old ones. and they sell well. Someone went out of their way to move the knobs, it was a decision made for some reason. Its not as if they are worried about people relicing them and selling them as old, or even cutting into the vintage market for them. i dont get it. |

Re: New SG Juniors
Up until a few days ago, I thought this was a Sam Ash exclusive, now that I know I can buy from Sweetwater, my mind (and wallet) are opening up a bit. Thanks for the find, Refugee.

Re: New SG Juniors
Actually I think its the other way around - they didn't want to move them to the vintage location because that would be going out of the way to do so. The modern Jr knobs look to be in the exact same place as two of the four on a regular SG. So more than likely, its easier to just tell the computer to not drill the other two than to reprogram new measurements as to where the vintage style knobs would go. Save a minute, save a buck.

Re: New SG Juniors
since the guitar is not technically a reissue that's why the specs (horn bevels/knobs/pick gaurd) aren't exactly the same as a 60s model. that being said, i don't mind some minor tweaking. i feel like it still retains 60s mojo. if it was a reissue, i'd want exact specs. this is a rad guitar for under a grand. can't wait to play one this weekend! i'll post again on playability, that's if i don't bring one home that day!
