Getting the best out of the Gibson Victory
I've been thinking about getting a Gibson Victory that a buddy of mines has sitting around. I'd like to have a pickguard mod to hold 3 single coils like a strat and maybe add a stetsbar trem system without having the body routed out for a tremolo. Anybody out there own a Victory and add anything cool to it ?

Re: Getting the best out of the Gibson Victory
I'd stick with the humbuckers, and add push/pull pots for coil splits.
BTW... I have never even seen on of those guitars, only the Victory basses. |

Re: Getting the best out of the Gibson Victory
The guitar plays very nice and is a set neck. I like it cause it reminds me of a set neck strat. So my intentions of making it strat like is pretty much the mod. Including finding someone who can cut me a new pickguard to hold 3 single coils

Re: Getting the best out of the Gibson Victory
I'd slap some humbucker sized P90s in there and a Vibramate/Bigsby. Looks nice as is though!

That is a really cool guitar! Think he'll sell it to me if you don't buy it? Haha.

Re: Getting the best out of the Gibson Victory
Always wanted one myself. Why turn it into a strat?

Re: Getting the best out of the Gibson Victory
Wasn't the point of those guitars to add "Fender" single-coil tones to the Gibson line-up (I'm pretty sure there's even a coil tap)? Have you ever played it to see what kind of tones are already there?
If you want a Strat, why not just buy a strat?

Re: Getting the best out of the Gibson Victory
i like the fact that the Victory is very Strat like so I might as well take advantages of its versatility. its nice to think about what i can do with this guitar with nice potentials like that. oh unlike the strat i love set necks, sorry Fender

Re: Getting the best out of the Gibson Victory
I'd say add push-pull pots to coilsplit, but you could also see if Pickguardian (www.pickguardian.com) could make a custom pickguard for you. I've never heard a single bad thing about his work. Also, he makes pickguards for several small and well respected guitar and guitar parts companies.

Re: Getting the best out of the Gibson Victory
I'm resurrecting a very old thread, I apologize. But I was searching "Gibson Victory" for more info on the guitars and basses and found this......awesome stuff!!!! Very lucky. Always wanted one myself (the guitar and the bass each).

Re: Getting the best out of the Gibson Victory
Yep,
Looks like a necropost. Anywho, YES! I owned and gigged with a Victory bass in the mid 80's. I sold it and like so many other stories like it, I kick myself every time I think about it. It was a great player. Brass nut even! |

Re: Getting the best out of the Gibson Victory
That Victory MVX has 3 humbuckers and the typical M-III switching. It's 2 way toggle switch splits all 3 pickups at the same time. So, you already have a pseudo Strat with it. The center pickup is a stacked humbucker. So, with the 2 way mini switch in one position, you have 3 single coils and with the switch the other way, you have 3 humbuckers. That was the whole selling point on all of these guitars. A Swiss Army Knife of guitars. So, no modifications needed. Stock....it does it all. Cheers.

Re: Getting the best out of the Gibson Victory
I found one of these about 10 years ago - a cherry MVX, missing the truss rod cover and oversprayed in a good colour match on the back.( Saw an ad in the paper and honestly didn't expect to see a Gibson when I went to see the guy - just looked, gave him his 200 and went home with it - no point haggling) It's not as ballsy as my 71 goldtop but it has its charm. If you want it to sound like a strat, I don't think that single coils are going to get you there. You'll be somewhere but it won't be stratland and it might not be as far as from where you started with the single coil switch as you expect. The set neck and killer weight give it a character that is what it is. What I like is that with a set of half rounds it can get a ridiculous jazz tone but will still scream almost like a les paul if needed.
However, my opinions are just that and not that interesting. I posted because I have a question. Mine has two miniswitches as well as the five position pickup selector. I've heard of one other but never seen a picture of my config. Anybody have one and know how its wired? I can't decide if one is a phase switch or whether there are two pickups on one and one on the other?? It's a confusing world. |
